Not-So-Perfect Parent: Identity

Before having kids, I made some proclamations to myself. You see, the presence of children was not going to alter my identity or my image. Although I understood that life would be more complicated, I was adamant that a child would not cramp my style. I was not going to sacrifice the person I was simply because I was given a new title of “mother”. WRONG!!

The instant my little boy was placed in my arms, my resolve to hold on to such things as sexy panties and foreign films seemed to slip away. We now own a “family-sized” car and go to “family-friendly movies”. I’ve learned that it is possible to feel sexy while wearing comfortable underwear and practical shoes. Don’t get me wrong, there are many days when I wish I could be free from obligations and responsibility and simply go away without having to arrange carpool. However, I have learned that being a parent does not change your identity. Instead, it is refined to include such priorities as messy kisses, morning snuggles, and lots and lots of laughter.
