I am sure there exists in some psychological journal a rationale for men’s obsession with giant televisions. If you find it, let me know because I really don’t get it. What is the appeal of having a television the size of a mini-van in a room where furniture must be sacrificed to allow space for this mega electronic? Why is it necessary to have super-sonic surround sound system while watching a baseball game? One of my male friends boasted about the decimal level on his mega amp speakers. I asked him, "Under what circumstances would you turn the volume up that loud?" He replied “Never, I have neighbors that I need to keep happy." When he witnessed my obvious perplexed expression, he stated “I just like knowing that I could blow the windows out if I wanted to.” Panasonic sponsored a survey conducted by an international research company based in New York. Although the results detailed the obvious (that men are more interested than women in owning a fancy shamcy plasma television), it also uncovered some surprising results on what men are willing to sacrifice in order to obtain this coveted TV. “Thirty-six percent of the married men surveyed would offer to do the household chores for a year; half (50 percent) of them are willing to let their in-laws visit as often as they want; and 57 percent said their significant other could select all of their vacation destinations for a year.” This leads me to wonder what other sacrifices are they willing to make. Would they be willing to change the toilet paper roll for the next three years? Would they be willing to sit and listen to a daily recap of what happened on Oprah? How about a permanent ban on quoting movies? Hmmm…. maybe a giant television in the living room is not such a bad idea – I’m tired of doing laundry! |
