Not-So-Perfect Parent: Decorating Hell!

I find decorating difficult on many levels. First - the details. I am not a detail person and my mind starts swirling when I have to coordinate paint color, with fabric, with window treatments and tile choices. There are simply too many options. I am completely overwhelmed in a fabric store, and I am embarrassed to admit that I get flustered having to consider little touches such as trim tassels.

The second challenging thing about decorating is husbands. Not all husbands, but some husbands (like mine), want to be included in the decision-making process and disapprove of the three options that were narrowed down after spending six hours going through wallpaper books. In addition, it is impossible to justify the cost associated with decorating. Let's face it, decorating is expensive. It is an impractical use of money that does not contribute anything to the greater good. From his perspective, as long as you have a television the size of a van and a mattress, you are good to go.

The third challenging thing about decorating is inconvenience. Having your home in a state of chaos while the floors are being installed or the kitchen cabinets are being painted can be very difficult on a family of four. Plus, there are all of those little surprises you find when you rip out a sink and realize that your entire plumbing system needs to be replaced.

Although decorating is overwhelming, expensive and stressful, there is so much pleasure sitting in a room where the window treatments and the pillow shams are coordinated. You experience momentary peace - that is, until, you realize that the living room could use some work.
