Not-So-Perfect Parent: Halloween

I interviewed Dr. Pete Stavinoah, a child neurophysiologist, about the importance of Halloween safety. After butchering the pronunciation of his last name, we launched into a dialogue that provided some great Halloween safety information. So, before your little spooks take to the street, consider these tips.

1. Stay with the group - don't let your little goblins wander off on their own. It is also important that an adult or responsible teenager accompany the kids on their Halloween walk.

2. Stay on sidewalks and driveways - some people get a little testy when their lawn gets trampled by a bunch of kids in costumes. Be considerate of neighbors and don't walk in their yards. Also, by staying on the sidewalks, you can stay clear of any street traffic.

3. Say thank-you at the door - this is basic consideration that all children should know. Make sure they say thank-you before darting off to the next house demanding more candy.

4. Inspect the candy - as much as we appreciate the homemade caramel apples and pumpkin cookies, do not allow your child to eat any goodies that are unwrapped. In addition, you may want to consider passing out other Halloween treats such as stickers or pencils. Let’s face it, they get so much candy that an occasional coloring book is a welcome substitute for more sugary stuff.

Stick to these tips and you will have a Spooktackular Halloween. Happy Haunting!
