Talking to Hong Kong in a Room by Myself

Answering machines to me are like little boxes filled with surprises... you never know what awaits you when you press the button. A few days ago I pressed the button and I hear, "Hi, I'm trying to reach Fran Capo. My name is Sarita and I'm calling from CNN International in Hong Kong. We were actually calling to inquire about an interview with Fran later this week..."

I start to smile. Even though I've done interviews all around the world, I still get a kick when I get a call overseas...what can I say...life amuses me. I call Sarita back and she asks me if I would be willing to go on CNN on Thursday, evening at 7:30.

"Sure where am I doing this? In Hong Kong?"
She laughs, "Sorry. No we have studios in New York."
I laugh, "Oh well, I tried. Thought maybe I'd make a quick trip over there."

I actually was partially serious...hey my friend Ashrita (who holds the world record for holding the most world records ... 144) flies around the world breaking records and doing interviews so you never know. As a matter of fact I just got an email from him that he broke a record racing on stilts against a camel. He won because the camel sat down and refused to budge.

Anyway...so I agree to do the show. I was pretty excited about it since CNN, specifically The Larry King Live Show, is how my fast-talking career got started. Again, it was a call out of the blue...saying they had read in the Daily News that I was planning on breaking a world record for fast talking and that Larry wanted me to attempt that record on the show first.

Honestly, at the time I didn't know who Larry King was. When I heard them say cable show, I thought it was some kind of porn thing. They reassured me it wasn't. I practiced for five hours while I waited for my limo to arrive, called Guinness to see what I had to do to break the record, then went into CNN studios, and broke the record at that time speaking 585 wpm. I rebroke the record at the Guinness Museum in Vegas doing the 603.32 wpm.

Sarita wanted me to come on CNN international and tell that story. She also wanted me to do a demonstration, talk about my other two records of doing the book signings on top of Kilimanjaro and at the Titanic and then talk about my new world record attempt coming up.

We arranged to have a car pick me up at my home to take me to the studio. It was supposed to be done via email...but for some reason the email never reached me, (and yes I do know enough to check my spam folder) but it wasn't there.

So I get a message from her on my cell phone. "Fran please call me back when you get this message...we need your address so the car service can pick you up." So I call her. Of course I forgot one minor detail...New York and Hong Kong are on a 12-hour time difference. So there I am calling the poor woman at 2 a.m. Of course I realized it when I sensed a bit of stumbling around to get a pen..."Oh my God...what time is it there? ...I'm so sorry. Look how about I hang up and you call me back at 3 a.m. my time...just to get even." She laughed and said it was fine...people do it all the time. Poor woman...how does she get any sleep?

With business done, a 5 p.m. car service pickup time was set. We figured put in an extra hour in case of rush hour traffic should give me plenty of time to be on air at 7:30. After all, you can't be late for a live show.

At 4 p.m. the driver rings the bell. I was still doing my emails and wasn't even dressed. "Good evening ma'am (I hate when they call me Ma'am)...just want you to know I'm here."

"Wow, thanks...but you're early, and I'm obviously not ready. I'll try to get ready as fast as I talk. Do you need a bathroom or some water?"

"No, I'm fine."

I got dressed and was ready by 5 p.m. as scheduled. Good thing getting ready was not a record I'm going for.

I showed the driver the shortcut to the city. His GPS had a British accent and was instructing him politely to go another way. I laughed, "That is one polite GPS." I think they should have a GPS with attitude...like a Brooklyn GPS..."Hey you missed the freaken turn, what the hell is the matter with you, are you gonna listen or do I have to smack you upside the head?"

Anyway, he was amused with my back road route.
"You are really way out here."
"Yeah, most people think I'm in the witness protection program."

We arrived at the Time Warner building at 6:05...it was bizarre there was no traffic. Of course, had I schedule the pickup for 6 PM we'd be sitting in the midst of a jam...such is life.

I was escorted to the CNN green room. I had all my "props" with me: my Guinness plaque, copies of my book covers that I took to the Kilimanjaro and the Titanic, the shrunken cup from the Titanic, Ripley's Book, and photos. Sarita said, "The more the better."

I was then taken into makeup room for, what else, makeup and hair. I love when they do it, because you always look great on camera. The makeup lady lightened up my lipstick, put some eye shadow on, and dolled up my hair. Sitting next to me was one of the anchors from the Situation Room.

After that I went back into the Green Room. As I was in there my friend Viv called, "Hey you busy?" I told her I was in the Green Room of CNN. She was out shopping said she was gonna run home and tape it. I told her it was CNN international...so I wasn't sure if she would get it...but she said she would try anyway.

As I hung up the phone, Paula Zahn walked in. We both said "Hi." At first I wasn't sure it was her, and I didn't want to say, "Hi Paula" if it wasn't her, plus she was running to the bathroom, so I figured let her go in peace. I had done Paula's show years ago...when I rebroke the record.

At 7:25 I was escorted into a small studio. I ask the PA (production assistant)
"Does this air in the US?"
She says, "If someone has CNN international on their cable system it does."
"Oh. I was just wondering if my friends here could see it."
"Well, maybe they can't but the whole world can see you and that's huge."
I smiled..."Yeah, I have to agree on that."

The PA hooked me up with an earplug so I could hear the director through it. The anchors, Andrew Stevens and Kristie Lu were in Hong Kong. This interview was being done via satellite. The director said, "Okay Fran in a few minutes we are going to throw a teaser over to you...introduce yourself and say a few words...you'll have 10 seconds. Just look into the black screen. The anchors will appear at the bottom of the screen, but don't look at them since there is a two second delay. Just look straight to camera."

"Okay got it."

The anchors came on..."and over to you Fran".

"Hi I'm Fran Capo, the Guinness Book of Worlds Records Fastest talking female...also the only author to do a book signing at the top of Kilimanjaro and down by the wreck site of the Titanic...I'm also going to be attempting to break another world record on July 14th at the Mind, Money, Body and Soul event...but I'll tell you more about that when we come back from break."

The director says, "Fran that was great. Just so you know...we are all laughing in the studio."

We came back from break and then I did my 4 minute interview. Talking about all my world records, and then inviting the world...(yes it's international) to join me in my next world record attempt.

"You see on July 14th and 15th at the Marriott in Uniondale, Long Island I am one of the speakers at a two day, Mind Money Body and Soul bootcamp experience.

I thought it would be fun to not only do the talk...but walk the walk...so I have arrange for the whole audience to attempt a world record... yes the whole audience at that event will attempt to break the yodeling record...now as if that's not enough...they will have to yodel for one minute on one foot. World record officials will be standing by ready to hand us a plaque if we do it...it's pretty cool".

Anyway...with that plugged...we were done with the interview.
I hear the director, "All clear." I take off the mike, pack up my things and am back in the limo heading home.

I get home...and wonder what I always do, "Who actually saw it."

I check my emails and I found out my long time email buddy in Thailand just happened to see it.

Then I get an email from Algeria, "HI MRS FRAN, I DID GET YOUR WEB SITE TROUGH THE CNN AS I AM REALLY PLEASED TO ENJOY YOUR NICE TALKING AS YOU ARE FUNNY WOMAN THAT YOU ARE THE WORLD FASTEST TALKING WOMAN .BY THE WAY FROM MY OWN JUDGEMENT YOU ARE SO SWEETY WOMAN AND HAVE NICE HEART..."

I smiled and emailed him back. I guess the world does watch...it's pretty cool to know that people all over the world can get a kick out of my fast talking....
