Celebrities and Record Holders at the Book Expo of New York

If you have ever written a book, or are in the book business you know that the Book Expo of America commonly called the BEA, is the biggest thing in the United States and if you are part of it, you are lucky.
Once a year, publishing houses, famous authors, book lovers, librarians, agents, clients, book buyers, and wanna be authors gather in the thousands to this three day event, that usually takes place the first weekend in June.
The BEA usually rotates from LA, to Chicago to NY. Thousands of booths are set up all vying for attention. Each booth trying to outdo the other for customer appeal. Tons of give always, huge posters, banners, food, music are just part of the tactics...but mainly people come to get the hot off the press book, signed by a famous author.
This year the BEA took place at the Javits Center in New York, and I was lucky enough to be a part of it once again. I have been part of the BEA for several years; demonstrating my fast talking skills in the Guinness Booth in Chicago; In LA for my Almost a Wise Guy book with Authorhouse (where I signed autographs in the special "autograph" area downstairs next to Julie Andrews); and my big banner year when I had three books come out at the same time; It Happened in Pennsylvania (Globe Pequot), Adrenaline Adventures (Authorhouse), and Ripley's Believe it or Not – Planet Eccentric book, where my fast talking skills and a picture of me doing a book signing on top Kilimanjaro were featured in a full page spread. Yup I'll never forget that year running booth to booth, and signing autographs next to the two headed cow.

This time however I was with at the BEA with a VIP pass from McGraw Hill as my good friend, Fitness Celebrity John Basedow had his first book coming out called, Fitness Made Simple.
I was excited for John because this was not only his first book out, but also his first time at the BEA and McGraw Hill was treating him like a royalty...huge posters of him, water bottles with his name on them, tons of books for him to sign etc.
I arrived at the 2007 BEA around 9:30 PM. John's assistant and posse member, Justin ran outside and handed me the passes...looked like black market book exchange deal.
Once inside, I happened upon my artist friend, Ali B. (Ali is the one who went on the miracle cleanse diet was me) She was a newbie to the BEA and was hoping to sell her comfort book idea.

I invited Ali to come with me to the McGraw Hill booth. As we approached we heard music... John was already in action. He was up on the stage in his skintight tank top, getting the crowd pumped to do some morning exercise. People in heels, business suits and skirts were all bopping to the beat and following his lead.
Never to be one to sit on the sidelines, and also thinking about that extra brownie I had last night...I immediately joined in.
As soon as John saw me sneak in, he pointed to me and introduced me to the crowd..."Oh and there's my best buddy, Fran Capo...she's the Guinness book of world records fastest talking female, author, motivational speaker...etc."

The audience seemed to get a kick out of it, and it was sweet of John to do that...during his hour to shine.
John had us sweating up a storm...okay maybe just a light shower since we were in work clothes...but I gotta say one thing...I realize how hard it is to stretch in a business suit...oh yes and green socks don't go with black pants...(I knew that...just never thought it would get captured on camera.)

After the workout, John signed autographs, hugged fans, and another episode was taped for the John Basedow TV Reality Show.
Once the morning heart pumping was done and I got my autographed book, I went on my rounds talking to my publishers. First stop was Globe Pequot to talk about selling my New York book on the celebrity bus tours I do.
Then it was over to the Guinness booth...where I spotted fellow world record holder, Michael Kettman. He holds the record for the most basketballs spun simultaneously, a total of 28 balls, spun on a specially designed frame, for 5 seconds.

Mike was there with his son, so I did some fast talking...and in return he asked if I ever spun a basketball on my finger...the answer was no for all of about ten seconds.
As I was doing my basketball magic, (which really burns by the way...) a kid calls out..."Hey, you're that fast talking lady! I saw you on CNN...Can I get an autograph?"
I smile, drop the ball and sign...never want to keep a fan waiting.

A crowd gathered and I wound up doing my famous fast "Three Little Pigs" rendition.
After the crowd left, I talked to my friend Peter over at Time Warner, the guys who publish the Guinness book.
I told him about my new world record-breaking idea of the crowd yodeling on one foot with me at the www.MindMoneyBodyandSoul.com boot camp. He shook his head and laughed, "You're always up to something!"
After that, I stopped at a few more booths. The isles were crowded...as James Patterson was autographing copies of his new book. I wiggled my way through...and then stopped. Off in the distance I hear this heavy German Accent! I look down and who is it...but my famous sex expert neighbor, Dr. Ruth Westheimer. Now this book I had to stand in line for.

The book was called, Sex for Dummies and I wanted to have it signed for a friend of mine as a goof...but before I could tell Ruth...she threw me off, "So do you have a sex question for me?" My friend, Ali who was standing next to me blurted out.
"Yes...How much is too much masturbation?"
She laughed, "Ven your hand falls off."
I turned so red...Ruth laughed and signed the book to me instead.
"Here you need it!"
I wasn't sure if I should say thank you or not...but I quickly left the booth.
Since I was already in a Believe it or Not mood, I headed over to the Ripley's booth. The representatives were in a meeting, so I peeked inside the new book, sure enough as promised there on page 222, was my latest record, my book signing by the depths of the sea...down by the wreck site of the Titanic.
Ali congratulated me...then went off to get some more books.
I showed Natasha, a new comer to the Ripley family, my Titanic cup.
There was also another Ripley's lady there...but believe it or not, I forgot her name...(bad Capo.)

I stayed and chatted with my Ripley's buddies, Barb and Norm. I told them about the yodeling record and they liked the idea...we talked about them sending someone down to the July 14th event as well.

We talked so long, bringing up the good times...like when were traveling around with the hairball and shrunken head in the car that we didn't realize the BEA was closed for the evening.
I went back over to McGraw Hill booth to get my knapsack, and who do I see by John and his right hand lady, Carlene...they were popped from the day's activities. Ali then came sauntering up with about 47 books that she got from the expo....nice stash. John and Carlene had one more event to go to...so we said our "congrats again" and parted ways.
On the way back to my car we saw some of our new friends from the Legwork team project. We decided to have dinner together....we walked blocks before we picked a place...I guess the name legwork came from experience.
After dinner we all exchanged cards, BEA stories, and promises of working together soon. Some photographer that works with a Manhattan paper snapped our picture for his story on the restaurant.
Drove one and a half hours home, tossed my pile of business cards on my desk...the cards that represent future dreams.
Ali went back to the BEA the next day...she called me on the phone. "Fran I just gotta tell you this...all total I got 167 books from the BEA."
"Ali, are you still an artist."
"Yeah, why?"
"Nothing, just thought you might be opening a bookstore!"
We both laughed. That said it all.... as lovers of the written word...there is no better place in the world than the BEA.
