A Gazillion Bubble Show or Don’t burst my Bubble

It started innocently enough. I received a Google alert email saying that a world renowned Bubble Artist (didn't even know such a thing existed) and 12 time Guinness Book World Record Holder, Fan Yang, was going to attempt to add another world record to his title... the worlds biggest bubble chamber and 34 people from the audience were going to be chosen to stand inside it.

I didn't need to read anymore, I was hooked... a world record attempt and the chance to stand inside a giant bubble... that was right up my alley.

The press release said that the tickets were free; all you needed to do was email the PR firm for reservations. I called my adventure pal interactive artist, Ali Berman and she was game as usual.

Then the coolest thing happened, after I sent the email to Joe, the PR guy, telling him who I was... he emailed me back and asked if I'd like to be one of the people inside the chamber! I was thrilled. I asked if Ali could go inside too, and he replied, "Sure."

But why stop there. I decided to up the ante so I called a producer friend of mine, Phil from RockMeTV.com.

"Phil, I think we have a great segment to shoot for an episode of Fran's World and Welcome to it, would you be able to send two cameras out on Tuesday?

I explained to him what was going on. He loved the idea and from there everything was set in motion. I called, Joe back and asked about taping and if I could wear a wireless mike while I was inside the bubble and make commentary...again he said yes...I was so happy. (Ah the simple things in life really give me a kick.)

The more I thought about it, the more excited I got. I'm like a kid when it comes to anything different, fun and unusual... the more unique the better I like it.

With everything set, Ali and I arrived at the New World Stage theater at 10:15. We met up with our cameramen, Brian and Jeff. We signed the appropriate release forms (hey you never know you can slip on some bubble soap, and that would really ruin everyone's day.)

Then we started to shoot, " Hi I'm Fran Capo... the Guinness Book of World Records fastest talking female and you're watching, Fran's World and Welcome to it... a show that celebrates the bizarre, unusual, and feats of human accomplishments. A show that takes you into my world where people strive for peak performance, or where I am constantly challenging myself to always explore the world and live life to the fullest. I mean why be ordinary if you can be extraordinary... today we are here at the Gazillion Bubble show... where Fan Yang, a Bubble Scientist, will attempt his Lucky number 13 record. My only hope is that when I am inside I don't poke a hole in the bubble with my elbow... I mean how embarrassing would that be if the headlines of tomorrows paper reads, "Fast Talker blows hot air and bursts bubble... with that said, I am going to be extra careful... let's go inside and get started."

As soon as we got inside, Joe from PR greeted us and showed us to our press section. We were told that they would give us and the other "bubble standers" a signal when we needed to go backstage. Fan of course was going to give a brief bubble laser light show to the audience.

The press was out in mass, I saw cameras there from ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, the Korean Channel, Spanish Channel and Iranian channel... etc.

At exactly 11 AM the show began. Music began to play and Fan came out in a sparkling shirt. Then he started to memorize the audience with his bubble art. Bubbles inside bubbles, small bubbles, big bubbles, square bubbles (Yes, you read that right), smoke bubbles... on and on... I never had a clue you could do so much with bubbles... apparently he has perfected this art and has a special mixture that allows the bubbles to be more durable, not durable like you can punch a whole through them, but durable as in they will last for a few seconds more.

Anyway, science aside, the kids in the audience were ohhing and ahhing, and one kid yelled out, "I think he ate a soap bubble." The audience laughed.

The show was dazzling... no wonder the show has been going around the world for the past two decades. Fan has been on Letterman, Regis Philbin, the CW and written up time and time again in the papers... one comment summed it up best. "Unlike anything you have ever seen before... he takes a simple bubble and turns it into a work of art."

Ali and I sat there dazed until a tap on the shoulder broke the spell. Joe signaled us, it was time to go backstage. They had a diagram of how we were to be set up. We were lined up like kindergarten kids, and we had the excitement to match. Our biggest worry was no one wanted to burst his bubble... literally!

I looked at the line of people.

Turns out I was not the only celebrity that gets a kick out of bubbles. On line was Michael Badalucco (From the Practice), Liz Tucillo (He's Just not that into You), cast members from Broadway shows, NBC's Cat Greenleaf, a few clowns and the classy lady herself, none other than the President's wife.... Jackie Onassis, dressed up in a pretty pink outfit.... (okay it was really Andrea Reese dressed at Jackie O...but it still looked very impressive.)

We filed out to the stage. Fan took each of our hands and placed us where he wanted us to be.

In the center of the stage was this giant floor grid layout. The soap bubble structure covered a vast area and had 13 rooms (which I believe was representative of that this would be world record number 13.)

Each chamber had an "island" that was surrounded by bubbles. The surrounding island held two people, and there was one center island that held 10 people.

Fan helped us onto the islands, making sure we didn't slip on the soapy bubbles. We were instructed to hug the person on the island.
This is one way to make friends quickly.

I was placed with Jackie O... center stage. Ali was on the island to my left with Michael (The Practice guy)... they were hugging up a storm. Apparently they were practicing for something else. Both were smiling and the record hadn't even begun.

Fan, the ultimate showman, turned to his audience and explained that he was only allowed three attempts according to Guinness rules to try to break the world record. For the record to be accepted all the walls in all the 13 chambers had to remain in place for a few seconds. He would pull a lever that would raise a giant bubble making wand contraption that would create the grid of bubbles. He worked long and hard on combining this art and science and now he was going to put it to the test.

On the count of three he lifted the bubble chamber making contraption the first time. A wall of bubbles went up around most of us... but Jackie and I were in the clear. Of course we began to worry that somehow we were sticking out and that's why we had no bubble... I looked at my butt, nope... not to big... but just in case we hugged tighter. I felt like a midget next to her... but at least I was in a nice bright blue so we looked very pastel together.

I had my wireless rockmetv.com mike on and of course I was making comments from the inside of the bubble –hoping of course that I wasn't blowing too much hot air.

Then Fan Yang did his second attempt, before he did, he remembered to tell us all to smile for the cameras... wanted a nice press photo if it did work.

With our big grins on, Fan again lifted the bubble chamber making contraption ...again the bubbles lasted for a few seconds... long enough so we could see our faces reflecting from the inside the multicolor bubbles, but not long enough to set the record.

We all held our breath... this was the last time he could try. No one wanted to move... the audience waited... we waited. He lifted the bubble chamber contraption and the walls, the beautiful bubble walls, all stayed up.

Yeah! He did it... he broke his 13th world record and we were part of it.

The audience applauded, we applauded and Fan had a gigantic smile on his face.

Out in the lobby I interviewed people that were inside the bubble, they all thought it was awesome. While I was waiting to interview Fan, one of the TV stations that wanted to interview me was, the Iranian channel, They said, "Hey you're the fastest talker, can you just say something light and funny for our audience." Now honestly, I wasn't sure what exactly Iranian humor was, and didn't want to get kidnapped for any of my comments, so I just said, ‘Hey this is Fran Capo, the worlds fastest talking female, I'm told you guys like to talk fast also...so maybe we all have a lot more in common than we think." They smiled, I smiled, so I figured I did okay.

Finally it was my time to interview Fan....

I had other reporters ask him the standard questions, so I wanted to make sure I had at least one he didn't expect. At first I asked him how he felt breaking the record, what got him started, for him to describe some of his other records and then the final question...

"So Fan, let me ask you, do you like bubble baths?"

He smiled, "I love them!"

"Does your wife yell at you... Hey Fan time to get out; you've been in there for over an hour?"

He winked, "No, actually she joins me..."

"Really, I love it... I'd ask you a lot more but we want to keep this a clean show".

I congratulated him, thanked Joe and the gang for letting us be part of this colorful event and looked around for a spot to do my closing piece.

I saw a giant bubble making machine... so I decided to do my close from inside a bubble.

"Well we just witnessed a world record... and I was part of it..." As I was doing this the bubble guy had to keep making new bubbles and they kept bursting in my face... but I kept talking...

"So... if you guys at home want to come see this extravaganza just go to www.gazillionbubbleshow.com. The show runs at the New World Stages theater (340 W 50th Street) from now till September 2nd..."

Again the bubbles popped, I could feel my hair and clothes getting soapy... then I said, "Okay, that's it, I had fun, and I think this is the cleanest I've ever been after a show, who needs a shower... maybe his is a new thing wash your clothes and yourself at the same time... anyway... this is Fran Capo... reporting for RockMeTV... thanks for being part of Fran's World. "

I closed with the shows tagline... "And remember ..."Don't shrink that screen."

I then yelled, "I'm melting... melting... and faded off screen."
