A Day in the Life of the Fast Talker
Posted October 27, 2006

I know most of my blogs are about one specific thing that happened to me during the week. But I thought, since a blog is a journal…that for this one time I would give you an idea of what my typical day is like. I chose this day at random and wrote down my events so I could report it to all you nice people reading my blog at mysweetconnection.com.

This journal is of Friday, October 6th, 2006.

From Blog to Pod
Posted October 20, 2006

I remember when I got my first computer. To me it was a glorified typewriter. I remember typing in a book I was working on, didn’t know anything about the stupid save button that you should use every few minutes and lost 80 pages of my book…just like that. I cried, I cursed, I swore I would never use a computer again.

Eventually I mastered the document aspect, and realized a computer was a heck of a lot easier than using white-out. Then the Internet came along. At first, I was scared to even do email because I thought if I pressed the wrong button, I’d wipe out everything on my computer. But I took a class and was told about all the wonderful things a computer and the Internet could do.

Wanting to jump on the bandwagon, I even had a website built for me…you know back in the day when you’d write http:// and a whole long description to get to your site.

To this day, I still know only a fraction of its uses. But in the interest of business, I try to move along and somewhat keep up with the times, and when all else fails I call on the help of my son, Spencer. (Jeez, it reminds me of when my mother couldn’t figure out how to use the answering machine…I was totally baffled at that…now I know how my son feels.)

These Breasts are Made for Walking.
Posted October 13, 2006

As part of my daily routine I like to work out. So naturally when I moved into my new abode I checked out the trails for hiking and for the colder/rainy days I located my friendly neighborhood Curves.

I had belonged to Curves in Howard Beach, then one in Ossining, and now in Putnam Valley. The great thing about Curves is you don’t have to worry about some guy sitting across from you grunting as you casually sit on the thigh machine.

The other nice thing is because the workouts are in a circle format, you get to chat amongst the woman which causes an instant camaraderie… all of you sweating together to the beat, trying to keep the boobs from going south.

At each Curves I’ve been lucky to have developed lasting friendships. Immediately upon signing up at this Curves, I knew this would be no different. There were all kinds of flyers and billboards for people to promote things and get to know and help their neighbors.

Shortly after joining, the owner, Teresa and I became friends. (She was the first person to buy my second edition of my “It Happened in New York" book she bought it on the day it came out!) Teresa would introduce me as the fast talker to all the members. It was like having a mini-publicist at the gym.

So when I found out that some of the Curves members were doing a three-mile-walk for breast cancer, I decided not only to sign up, but enlist my neighbor, Wanda as well.

The Fast Talking $3000 Cup of Coffee
Posted October 5, 2006

When you think of coffee, most people think of a fast, quick energy boost in the morning, well lucky for me that's what the good people at Chock Full O'Nuts thought of as well.

So when it came time to holding a contest in search for the "Chock Full O'Nuts Fastest Talking New Yorker", they decided to give me a call. They asked me to judge their contest, be their spokesperson and of course have some fun with the media promoting it.

As with most campaigns, we had conference call pow-wow with the Chock Full of Nuts People, Coyne (their PR firm), and Trimarc from the contest board all discussing how the official contest would be run. We decided that the contestants would have to say the jingle, "Chock Full O' Nut's is that heavenly coffee, heavenly coffee, heavenly coffee, Chock Full O' Nuts is that heavenly coffee, better coffee a billionaires money can't buy", as many times as they could in a New York minute. But here's the catch; they'd have to say it with precision and passion. After all, hearing someone mumble in monotone would just make you think of the Rain man on speed and it wouldn't really be talking anyway.
