Jonas Brothers dig '80s music

The Jonas Brothers Thursday night at Nokia Theatre. (Randy Eli Grothe/DMN)

As a self-proclaimed '80s pop and new wave fanatic -- and I have no qualms about admitting it -- I'm tickled that the Jonas Brothers dig that sonic era. At the trio's sold-out Nokia Theatre show Thursday night they covered A-ha's "Take On Me." How cool! Granted, the original is still best, but they did a decent job with it. Now, ironically, neither of the JoBros. were alive in 1985 when A-ha's timeless pop single hit No. 1. And certainly they weren't even figments when Kim Wilde released 1982's "Kids in America," which the Jonases remade as "Kids of the Future." But hey, they're mining my fave music territory, so the Jonas Brothers are OK with me!

Eric Clapton & Dallas Bluesman Sam Myers

When Eric Clapton played New York Monday with old Blind Faith-mate Steve Winwood, they took another crack at "Sleeping in the Ground" by Sam Myers, the late Dallas bluesman who sang with Anson Fundergburgh & the Rockets. Slowhand and Winwood originally cut "Sleeping" nearly 40 years ago. Here's my obit on Sam from 2006.

Hey in other Clapton news, he was invited by the North Korean government to play a show. He hasn't answered back, but that's still wild. Apparently Kim Jong Il's son is a big fan - not sure if I'd take that as a compliment or not, tho.

OMG! The Jonas Brothers are in town!

Did you get tickets to the sold-out show tonight at Nokia Theatre? Parents, what did you go through to get tickets? Tell us your story.

And if you're one of the lucky ticket holders, don't forget to come back and tell us how the show went. If you're not, you can still shriek-and-freak when the bros come back to town next Tuesday.

I didn't take my daughter, her father volunteered, or was persuaded, whatever.
I did my turn at the fair and that was fun!!
But she came home jumpy, excited and wouldn't go to sleep.
OMG!!!

Mandy Moore's getting social

The singer and actress is launching a social networking site through Kraft Foods aimed at women, where she and three other personalities issue challenges to members and offer ideas for cocktail parties, personal style and other fun stuff. Upumpitup's decidedly un-Mypsace but still, eh, cute.

Dolly Parton remains classic in sound and image

A Barbie doll with a heart. (Courtesy of Dolly Records)

Look at her. Just look at her! Is that CD cover quintessential Dolly Parton or what? The woman has been our Backwoods Barbie for so long you have to wonder why she waited decades to use that phrase as a record title? Now, Miss Dolly's latest album, her return to mainstream country after years of bluegrass releases, is totally wonderful. But let's give another A to the photos in the CD booklet. There's one where Dolly, in full get-up, is mowing the lawn with one of those old-fashioned mowers. There's another of her on a small boat that floats along a picturesque river. Yet another of her, again in her signature wig, heels, makeup and dress, standing on the front porch of a rickety shack. They are just precious, classic stuff. Dolly has always been as much about the visuals as about the musical talent. Good thing with her both are top-notch.

I love her in her hot pink!

Bob Dylan at House of Blues: The Stage Crasher

Bob Dylan had barely started his show Saturday night at House of Blues when an over-excited female fan ran onstage and tried to get his attention --- a bizarre scene captured on Youtube. (The stage-crashing occurs a minute into the video). At least she didn't rip off her shirt ala the "Soy Bomb" nut case who ran onstage when Zimmy played the '98 Grammys.

Thanks for the Youtube link Thor. Youtube is "...handy as a pocket on a shirt" (as we say in Texas). I'm also digging all the creative ways people are using songs and Youtube during the presidential campaign. Somebody's made one of "This One's for the Girls" by Martina McBride.

Pat Green's gorgeous Texas dance hall book

(From Dance Halls & Dreamers)

The Texas country singer-songwriter from Fort Worth wins big Texas-lovin' points with his new coffee table-sized book, Pat Green's Dance Halls & Dreamers. The hardback book features profiles of ten old-school halls from around the state, including Sons of Hermann Hall and Billy Bob's. In addition to the structures themselves, the book includes beautiful images of folks kicking it up and of artists who play the halls, including the most photographable of all, Willie Nelson. Town dance halls topped Preservation Texas' recent list of the state's most endangered historic places, making the book not just beautiful but timely.
