Heavy Rain And A Lop-Sided Storm

Dolly made history as only the second July hurricane to strike south of Matagorda Bay. The last one was a storm from 1909 on nearly the same date. We benefitted from Dolly's rain in a big way today. Look at how the showers streamed in from the Gulf of Mexico in nearly equally-spaced bands:

Is Bertha A Sign Of Things To Come??

6:42 PM Tue, Jul 08, 2008 |
Gene Norman

It's only early July and already we have a hurricane. Bertha formed just before the July 4th holiday weekend and by the time everyone came back to work, it was a Category 3 hurricane. It won't likely affect any land areas other than bringing higher waves to the East Coast of the U.S. and Bermuda. However, it is rather early in the season for a hurricane. So I did some digging and found some interesting facts about July hurricanes and the r...

Number Two And Déjà Vu?

As in the second storm of this young hurricane season. Bertha formed today off the west coast of Africa. These "Cape Verde" storms, so called because of their proximity to the isolated islands usually don't begin to appear until early August. So you may first begin to wonder if this is a sign of an earlier start to a bust hurricane season. It's a little too early to tell. Water temperatures in the eastern Atlantic are a bit warmer than la...
