A Storm - Already??

11:11 AM Fri, May 30, 2008 |
Gene Norman

Yes, there has been a tropical storm to talk about. Alma formed in a day and is now raining itself out over Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. Even though the Atlantic Hurricane season doesn't begin until Sunday, June 1, the Eastern Pacific season has been going since May 15th. Alma never strenghtened to a hurricane, but torrential rains have been falling in Central America for the past few days. Heavy rain like that highlight the dual t...

When Will You Go?

I remember watching all of the Houston stations three years ago on my computer while I was still in Atlanta. There was wall-to-wall coverage of approaching Hurricane Rita and the ensuing chaos that broke out after the evacuation order. I couldn't believe it every time I saw a shot of the freeways clogged with cars trying to get anywhere, but not moving much at all.

As we've been preparing segments for our upcoming Hurricane Special...

Hurricane Season Countdown - Day 1

June 1 isn't just the start of a new month. For residents on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, it marks the beginning of hurricane season. For the next six months, we'll pay particular attention to storms that form in the Atlantic or Gulf of Mexico. Along the Texas coast, we've seen storms as ealry as June, especially if Gulf waters have been very warm in May. Our storm threat is two-fold because some of the most destructive storms we've exper...

No Telescope Needed

The International Space Station will make several passes over the Houston night sky the next few evenings. Because of its position toward the sun, it will be very bright and visible without the aid of a telescope. Not even nighttime "light pollution" will keep most of us from seeing it. However, it is only visible for a few short minutes each night. Here's the schedule:

Tonight 5/21 - 9:38 am look in the west-southwest sky

Big Storms Today

Just after 10 am, a severe storm ripped across southern Walker county, near New Waverly. David Paul was informing viewers with cut-ins and HD Doppler captured these great images of the storm:

Set To Get Wet

I can't remember the last time it rained here more than two days in a row, so I looked it up. Turns out it was March 29-30. That was a while ago. We had some sprinkles today, but we're expecting heavier downpours overnight and into Thursday. Not flooding, but there will likely be some substantial downpours. That's good because we need it. Even though the north side of town had a deluge on May 5, everyone south of I-10 has been pretty dry...

A True Tragedy

As we learn more about the incredible disaster in Myanmar (formerly Burma), it's hard to believe the loss of life there. I was stunned to hear an estimate of 100,000 people; possibly as many as 40,000 children could be lost.

Cyclone Nargis is comparable to a hurricane. That's what they're called in the Indian Ocean. Actually all tropical systems form around increasingly deepening areas of low pressure. This one was tracked for da...

STREEEE-IKE!

11:04 AM Mon, May 05, 2008 |
Gene Norman

All my anxiety melted away when Mallory Conger, the PR rep for the Astros handed me the ball and said, "Head for the mound". The sun was shining, the roof to Minute Maid Park was open and there was a healthy pre-game crowd of about thirty thousand for a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Brewers.

I took the ball from Mallory and lightly jogged to the mound, purposefully skipping over the third-base line and gingerly walking up the f...

Tricky Weekend

Usually, I'm looking forward to the weekend. It's a time to relax, but this weekend, I have a lot going on. First, I'm helping a relative move (always a joy) and then on Sunday, I get a real treat - throwing out the first pitch at the Astros game against the Brew Crew. Everyone's been giving me plenty of advice. The key seems to be reaching back far like I'm trying to launch a whip. They say it's the longest 60 feet you'll ever throw somet...
