Gene Norman: April 2008 ArchivesWow! Wasn't this morning something? The official low at Bush Intercontinental Airport was 46, shattering the previous record of 51 set in 1996. Galveston and College Station were also cooler than normal but not quite records at 58 and 47 respectively. Enjoy it while you can because this is probably the last time you'll see this kind of relief from warm and muggy weather. By the way, the "normal" Houston weather will return by Wedne... Oh, how I already miss the dry and pleasant weather we had just a week ago. The humidity has returned and on Tuesday, we might see some home-grown showers and thunderstorms erupt. But it begs the question - why doesn't it rain every day it's humid? To first answer that, we have to understand that there are two ways that we get rain - one is from the collision of air masses, such as when a cold front moves through. That's what happen... The beautiful blue sky and pleasant breeze Tuesday on Galveston Island made me forget all about the date - April 15. For the first time in years, I filed an extension. But on this tax day, my attention was focused on Scholes Field and this plane, operated by the National Weather Service and our tax dollars:
All weekend long, wherever I went, people we happy about this past weekend's weather. More than few suggested that both days were a "10" on the Norman Number scale. I couldn't argue with them and it got me thinking that I should explain a little about this feature in my weather casts: the Norman Number. Basically, the concept is pretty simple. Suppose a friend said to you that he or she went to a nice restaurant. You want to check ... I noticed something odd late Friday just as I was set to leave for the night. A printout slid into the tray on the printer in the weather office. It was the 6 to 10 day outlook from the Climate Prediction Center. I glanced at it before hanging it on the pegboard in the office and then I did a double take. The outlook indicated below normal temperatures for the middle of the country including Houston for the period of April 10-13. ... Wow! What a sight thousands witnessed tonight at the 'Stros Home Opener! First, it was such a great thrill for me to be on the field for the 5 PM news today. I left Houston before the stadium opened and saw the final game ever played in the Dome against the dreaded Braves. So in my 8 years at Hot-lanta, I rarely went to the Ted (that's what they call the stadium there) because frankly, I can't stand the Braves. Aren't you glad I don't min... I don't know about you, but the past few days have had me draggin' and it's only April. Eight years ago, when I last lived here, I tried to use 80 as my threshold for when I'd turn on the A/C. Here we are three days into April and it's been on every day, so I bought me some programmable thermostats - got to keep ahead of those kWh! That's something I'm going to have get used to - electricity deregulation, also new since I've returned. Talk... Did someone play an April fool's joke on you? I hope the scattered showers popping up around town this afternoon didn't catch you off-guard and find you without an umbrella. Either way, it's a brand new month. We end March dodging quite a few close-calls with severe weather. However, nothing really happened and as we head into April, we'll be ever watchful as that's when our severe weather season usually kicks into gear. March came... |
