Hitting The Roads?

Gene Norman

I have good news for the thousands of you that will hit the road Wednesday, over the river (Brazos) and through the woods (Piney) to Grandma's house. The weather should cooperate. Whether you're headed west along I-10 or north on I-45 throughout the state, you'll encounter nothing more than clouds and mild weather:

What Happened??

It's not often that the weatherman has egg on his face, but this past weekend was one of those times. On Friday, I touted the cool, cloudy and damp weekend that we should all expect. Imagine my surprise awaking that Saturday morning greeted by - the sun. In fact, both days this past weekend had quite a bit of sun and not the overcast skies predicted by yours truly. So, what happened???

On Friday, I explained that the cold front tha...

About-Face

For the first time since Hurricane Ike, we have a chance for rain on the weekend. That's because the 10th cold front this fall, which slipped into the Gulf Thursday night, will drift back north as a warm front this weekend. Here's a sequence:

Another Cold Front

Don't get too used to this mild weather because it's about to change - again. Another strong cold front will come blasting out of the Central Plains Thursday and it will usher in a return of the kind of weather we saw at the end of last week. Things will change quickly during the day so pack a jacket or coat. You may not need it when you leave the house, but you will by the time you head home. By my count, it's the tenth cold front to swin...

The Big Chill

It's the closest thing to a Blue Norther so far this season as temperatures plummet into the upper 30s by Sunday morning. A "real" blue Norther is a strong cold front that sweeps down from the Central Plains into Texas. The "blue" part comes from the skies that accompany the front and the "north" part is because that's where it comes from - up north. In a classic Blue Norther, there are usually strong storms in advance of the storms and tem...

A Soggy Stretch

Todays rainy start to the work week it only the beginning of several days of rain and possibly even some rough weather. It's a one-two weather punch. First, a warm front that set up in deep South Texas over the weekend began pushing up the coast today. When that happens, showers usually develop along the front and move northward in waves. Check out the heavy rain that fell today in Matagorda and Brazoria counties:

Fall Storm Season

6:58 PM Wed, Nov 05, 2008 |
Gene Norman

We're bracing for the threat of storms tomorrow and they're right on schedule for this time of year. We really have two severe weather seasons in Texas: the spring and the fall. That's when we see the collision of the air masses. In the spring, cold air is retreating back into Canada while warm air is surging from the Gulf of Mexico. In the fall, it's the opposite: the cold air is starting to plunge southward from the north, colliding with...
