Dangerous Category 3 hurricane Gustav continues to head for the southern Louisiana coast and it will make a landfall somewhere near Grand Isle or just west of there. While it never reached Category 5 status, it still remains a storm that will produce destruction on the scale of Alicia. Torrential rain up to 10 inches; thankfully, the storm isn't moving slower or the rain amount would be higher. A storm surge will be between 9 to 12 feet, which could easily swamp locations at the tip of Louisiana, which are basically marshland with few inhabitants. This storm will very likely stress the New Orleans levy system and the city in general, three years after Katrina. Once the storm makes landfall, things get more interesting for us. Since we are on the west side, the so-called "clean side" of the storm, our impacts will be minor. We will see some squally rain bands move through beginning in the afternoon tomorrow and continuing through early Tuesday. The heaviest rain will likely fall east of Houston and north of Galveston Bay. Also, we'll notice the winds pick up and get stronger later in the day. There is also the threat of tornadoes once the storm interacts with the land and upper level winds across East Texas.
