Gustav growing stronger

Tonight, Hurricane Gustav is packing 80 mph winds over the Cayman Islands, which won't weaken the storm at all the way Haiti and Jamaica did. Saturday, the storm is expected to pass over the western edge of Cuba and get into the very warm Gulf of Mexico waters.

Then, the forecast calls for rapid intensification into a category 4 storm by Sunday night. While the target area continues to be the southern Louisiana coast sometime Tuesday, we will feel an effect from the storm in the form of higher winds by Monday night and rain from the outer bands of the storm by Tuesday and Wednesday. It will all depend on how large Gustav gets and how far from the center the highest winds spread. Stay tuned this weekend for the very latest.

We keep hearing all this about how New Orleans needs to be making preparations and the way it sounds we have nothing but maybe a little rain to worry about. Granted New Orleans is at a very high risk of flooding, but the new models are showing Gustav making more of a westerly turn which could put him closer to us. So in your opinion could this possibly be a Katrina version of Houston. I have talked to a lot of people who say they won't leave regardless, and if it does turn more west are we going to have 6 million people trying to evacuate at once in a very short period of time? We've not heard one word about Beaumont or Houston. I understand how unpredictable these storms can be but, how long is the weather center going to wait until we are told to evacuate?

Is the weather center sure that the storm is heading directely towards Louisiana and not Texas. So we texans have nothing to worry about.

Gene,

Is it too early to think about leaving town? I live in an area where I'm not really worried about flooding, but I don't want to be around here if the area is without power or water possibly. Thanks for the info!

I sure hope it stays away. There are two HUGE piles of debris 20-35' high from apartments that were demolished by the Endeavour company near the intersection of NASA 1 and Repsdorph Road in Seabrook that would be flying everywhere if the winds come up. There has been no activity this weekend to remove this dangerous hazard to our community!

I live in La Porte actually Morgan`s point. We hear a lot about Houston and Galveston but La Porte not so much. I was just wondering what it looks like for us. We live less than 1 mile off the water so do we follow what is said for Houston or galveston? Sounds silly I know but we are just curious. Thanks a bunch.

If a hurricane comes in at Galveston or Freeport with, winds of 150 miles/hour, what will the winds be 60 miles from either city?

Thanks

I have watched all the other info offered by the other stations via internet. You guys and gals are by far the best. I don't know why I even look at the others. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Not only are we dealing with this Hurricane and living in Seabrook..but we had to cancel our daughter Summer's wedding on Sat the 13th scheduled to take place at the lovely Tremont in Galveston. We were all ready and set to go with over 200 guests coming.
We are trying to sign up for the weather call to our cells before leaving and they're not asking for a credit card number. Does this mean that we are not signed up or are the systems jammed?
Thankyou for the sacrifice that your families make in sharing you with us 24/7 during these difficult days.
You are so appreciated and ofcourse 11 is our favorite source of news and weather....Not just during Ike!!
Thankyou,
Carol and Algie Smith and Summer(was going to be O'Neal on Saturday, but Smith will have to do until we reschedule their wedding) It might cheer her up to get a "Shout Out!"

Hello
We are in the Woodlands and are concerned about the wind speed and a major concern is traffic.
We live at 242 and I45 and we cannot even get out to get around our own community.
Is there a way to block all this traffic to stop coming onto the feeder roads and just allow local residents to utilize the feeders?
We just absolutely cannot get anywhere and we need supplies to get to too.
When all these people come back, has anyone considered what the ramifications of all these evacuees returning will be? Because once again we will be confined to our homes as all these evacuees tend to ram rod our feeders and are careless and do not let us be mobile in our own city of The Woodlands. If no-one has considered it yet, can you please pass this concern on? There are fifty of us asking this question so far, more will come as time goes on. (With Allison and Rita, The Woodlands was terrible, people just left their trash everywhere throughout the community and we then we had to worry about our safety at times)

Thank you for your time and all your efforts and wonderful reporting.
Hope you and your families stay safe!
