After dumping torrential rain on Jamaica, Gustav did what we thought - strengthened in the very warm Caribbean waters around the Cayman Islands. Now the storm will continue to grow. As it crossed Haiti and Jamaica the past few days, it weakened somewhat. However, that won't be the case with the Cayman Islands, as they don't have any terrain to speak of. Then the storm will move toward western Cuba - another opportunity for possible weakening Saturday. It should enter the Gulf Sunday. After that, the forecast is still very uncertain. Even though a projected landfall might be along the Louisiana coast, we might feel the effects of the storm in the form of increased wind and higher wave action along the coast as early as Sunday. Depending on how far the spiral bands extend, we may see some squally showers late Sunday into Monday. Stay tuned and stay alert. Check out our new feature to keep you connected to the weather. When speaking of millibars in hurricane discussion what is the importance of mb? How does this happen and what makes it change?
Thanks in Advance
ML
Millibars is a unit of pressure. The lower the pressure, the stronger the storm. As the strom strengthens, the pressure lowers and this is reflected in smaller numbers in units of millibars or mb. For example, today, Gustav's pressure has been hovering around 944 mb. Quite low and relfective of the maximum winds being 150 mph.
RE: Gustav... We need to see the location of highs, lows and fronts over N. America and hear some discussion on what they will do as steering currents effecting Gustav as it nears the coast.
Please show us more sophsticated weather information and your interpretation !!!
We have always depending on 11-news for Hurricane information. Now that we moved to Chambers County we noticed your evacuation map does not show eastern Chambers County, just western Chambers County. All of Chambers County gets their news from Houston not Beaumont. Can you please include evacuation maps for all of Chambers County?
