Gustav growing stronger

Tonight, Hurricane Gustav is packing 80 mph winds over the Cayman Islands, which won't weaken the storm at all the way Haiti and Jamaica did. Saturday, the storm is expected to pass over the western edge of Cuba and get into the very warm Gulf of Mexico waters.

When It Rains...

You know how we've been saying how much we needed rain this summer? How we were dealing with a 7" deficit? Well, that's all forgotten after the rain the past few days. Officially, Bush Intercontinental Airport has picked up over 6" this month alone, making it the wettest month so far this year. Today, a heavy thunderstorm stopped, literally, over Southwest Houston and poured down rain, turning streets into rivers. Here's what our HD Doppl...

Fickle Fay

3:12 PM Tue, Aug 19, 2008 |
Gene Norman

Tropical Storm Fay made landfall early Tuesday morning near Cape Romano about 55 miles south of Ft. Myers. The maximum winds with the storm were near 65 mph and the storm has retained that strength as it slowly moves across the Peninsula. Over land it, is has developed an eye and is battering central Florida with high winds and heavy rain. The odd thing today is that many computer models suggest that Fay may do a loop-de-loop and end up bac...

A TRICKY TRACK

11:28 PM Mon, Aug 04, 2008 |
Gene Norman

Several times today, the hurricane track changed and many people in the newsroom wondered why? The answer is fairly simple - tropical systems are highly unpredictable. This seems like an oxymoron in our digital age. After all, we have supercomputers and sophisticated technology, so why is it so difficult to predict? Perhaps the other underlying issue is that we want to cling to certainty. If we say that the storm will make landfall at Gal...

HERE COMES EDOUARD

8:17 PM Sun, Aug 03, 2008 |
Gene Norman

The fifth named storm of the season is poised to be the second storm to strike Texas. It's rapid development is another reason why we need to stay vigilant throughout hurricane season, especially as we head into the heart of the season. Unlike Dolly, a storm we tracked for days across the Atlantic, then into the Caribbean and finally into Texas, Edouard formed differently.

A few days ago, storms developed in southern Georgia and the ...
