Just after 10 am, a severe storm ripped across southern Walker county, near New Waverly. David Paul was informing viewers with cut-ins and HD Doppler captured these great images of the storm:
I can't remember the last time it rained here more than two days in a row, so I looked it up. Turns out it was March 29-30. That was a while ago. We had some sprinkles today, but we're expecting heavier downpours overnight and into Thursday. Not flooding, but there will likely be some substantial downpours. That's good because we need it. Even though the north side of town had a deluge on May 5, everyone south of I-10 has been pretty dry... As we learn more about the incredible disaster in Myanmar (formerly Burma), it's hard to believe the loss of life there. I was stunned to hear an estimate of 100,000 people; possibly as many as 40,000 children could be lost. Cyclone Nargis is comparable to a hurricane. That's what they're called in the Indian Ocean. Actually all tropical systems form around increasingly deepening areas of low pressure. This one was tracked for da... All my anxiety melted away when Mallory Conger, the PR rep for the Astros handed me the ball and said, "Head for the mound". The sun was shining, the roof to Minute Maid Park was open and there was a healthy pre-game crowd of about thirty thousand for a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Brewers. I took the ball from Mallory and lightly jogged to the mound, purposefully skipping over the third-base line and gingerly walking up the f... Usually, I'm looking forward to the weekend. It's a time to relax, but this weekend, I have a lot going on. First, I'm helping a relative move (always a joy) and then on Sunday, I get a real treat - throwing out the first pitch at the Astros game against the Brew Crew. Everyone's been giving me plenty of advice. The key seems to be reaching back far like I'm trying to launch a whip. They say it's the longest 60 feet you'll ever throw somet... Wow! Wasn't this morning something? The official low at Bush Intercontinental Airport was 46, shattering the previous record of 51 set in 1996. Galveston and College Station were also cooler than normal but not quite records at 58 and 47 respectively. Enjoy it while you can because this is probably the last time you'll see this kind of relief from warm and muggy weather. By the way, the "normal" Houston weather will return by Wedne... Oh, how I already miss the dry and pleasant weather we had just a week ago. The humidity has returned and on Tuesday, we might see some home-grown showers and thunderstorms erupt. But it begs the question - why doesn't it rain every day it's humid? To first answer that, we have to understand that there are two ways that we get rain - one is from the collision of air masses, such as when a cold front moves through. That's what happen... The beautiful blue sky and pleasant breeze Tuesday on Galveston Island made me forget all about the date - April 15. For the first time in years, I filed an extension. But on this tax day, my attention was focused on Scholes Field and this plane, operated by the National Weather Service and our tax dollars:
All weekend long, wherever I went, people we happy about this past weekend's weather. More than few suggested that both days were a "10" on the Norman Number scale. I couldn't argue with them and it got me thinking that I should explain a little about this feature in my weather casts: the Norman Number. Basically, the concept is pretty simple. Suppose a friend said to you that he or she went to a nice restaurant. You want to check ... I noticed something odd late Friday just as I was set to leave for the night. A printout slid into the tray on the printer in the weather office. It was the 6 to 10 day outlook from the Climate Prediction Center. I glanced at it before hanging it on the pegboard in the office and then I did a double take. The outlook indicated below normal temperatures for the middle of the country including Houston for the period of April 10-13. ... |
