We've seen a handful of grass fires the past few days and we could see some more soon if we don't get some rain. When the air is very dry like it was today and its very windy, the Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning. When that happens, you should be very careful where you discard cigarette butts or used matches (you should do that anyway) and avoid outdoor burning. >> Continue reading: Way Too Dry This holiday weekend, there are a lot of special events going on. On Saturday, it's the East-West Shrine football game featuring some of best seniors from the college gridiron. It's Saturday at 3 pm at Robertson Stadium on the U of H campus:
Just thought I'd post a quick entry about some up-coming events. First, on Sunday, the Houston Marathon. I'm not a runner, but one of my fondest memories of this race was back in 1997, when we had an ice storm. It was really odd to see those great marathoners cross the finish line with icicles in their hair! No chance of that happening 12 years later. The second day of 2009 has been unusually warm. Our low this morning of 64° is what the normal high should be. Warm, moist air continues to flow into Southeast Texas. Meanwhile, to our west, a devleoping upper-level storm system is poised to plow into that warm air and touch off showers and thunderstorms while you sleep tonight into Saturday morning. Here's what our Super Microcast computer model indicates: >> Continue reading: Stormy Start To Saturday Another round of winter weather follows the 15th cold front to invade Southeast Texas this fall. Officially, winter doesn't begin until this Sunday, but we've already seen snowflakes and by Tuesday morning, there could be ice on bridges and overpasses north and west of Houston. Officially, the National Weather Service has issued a Freezing Rain Advisory for several counties north and west of Houston: >> Continue reading: First Snow, Now Ice - Yikes!! Did you see the moon tonight? If you thought it looked big and bright, you're right! This month, the moon is at perigee. That means the moon is closest to the Earth, so it's bigger in our sky. The moon orbits the Earth in an elliptical orbit, so it's not a circle, but more like this:
