"I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. I started in the construction field as a child, watching my father build and remodel homes. From a very early age, I would play in my room creating floor plans with my Legos and Lincoln Logs. As I grew, I went to work for my father carrying lumber and learning the trade of construction. After high school, I went full time into building and remodeling. I had knack for visualizing, designing, and creating what people wanted in their homes. As years went by, construction in the DFW area boomed and the economy was a strong and stable. I enjoyed my job, loved meeting new people, creating new plans, and being able to see a project from start to finish. This success continued for several years, then after 9/11 like a lot of other industries we took a hit. Business rebounded for a short while and then slowly decreased to a crawl with new home building. I stayed afloat for awhile doing remodeling but as the economy failed my business faltered. I found myself without work, with a trade that was no longer desired. I worked effortlessly trying to find new employment in my field. But as days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months I felt like the hamster on a wheel continuously going in circles. I would wake up in the morning and ask myself, "What do I do with a trade that is no longer needed?" Like anyone that feeling of worthlessness began to bring me down. At that point, through prayer I decided to take the high road and beat this! I started investing what resources where out there to reeducate myself in a different field. I found a program through the Texas Workforce Commission called the W.I.A. I feel like Bertha and I are voices of what so many North Texans have felt this past year. I will be adding more to the blog about my successes and failures in the coming days. As Kidd Kraddick always says, "Keep looking up because that's where it all is!"" 2 CommentsLeave a comment |
