Sam Rutherford Elementary Students Take Action In Environmental Fundraising

The students, along with the PTA at Sam Rutherford Elementary in Mesquite, Texas are taking action to create environmental awareness through fundraising. In lieu of selling candy or gift wrap, the students will sell gift trees provided by the Arbor Day Foundation. Each gift tree comes in a recyclable tube that is made of 50% post-consumer content and can easily be converted to a bird feeder once the tree has been planted. The gift trees cost $6. Fifty percent goes directly back to the Arbor Foundation benefiting local, national and global reforestation projects.

Rutherford Elementary students are doing their part to erase their carbon footprint and
promote conservation throughout their community. Currently, Mesquite ISD is expanding its green efforts, saving thousands of paper copies, by posting its community fliers online
instead of distributing paper ones. A complete elimination of fliers on campuses will take
place by January 1, 2010. Recycle bins have already been placed throughout the schools for use.

The fundraiser begins on Wednesday, November 4th and will last for two weeks. You may
also choose to donate your gift tree to The City of Mesquite. If you would like to support Rutherford Elementary by purchasing a tree, please contact the school at 972-290-4060 or visit their website for more information at http://www.mesquiteisd.org/rutherford.
