Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for policelogo.jpgSome crimes just seem desperate, especially when they involve shooting a 67-year-old man and leaving him in the back of his own van.

Ijaz Mahmood, 67, worked for Mac's Check Cashing. He regularly serviced a business in the warehouse district of Turning Basin. He cashed paychecks for workers from a mobile check-cashing white GMC minivan, usually arriving around 3:30 p.m. and beginning work at 4:00 p.m.

Things were business as usual until July 7, when Mahmood was accosted by several men in two vehicles. According to reports, as Mahmood drive into the area, the men pinned his vehicle between them making it impossible for him to drive away. One man approached him. They struggled a bit and then the suspect shot the 67-year-old in the chest. The suspect then took Mr. Ijaz Mahmood's vehicle and fled the scene. The other men took off in the other two vehicles.

Mr. Ijaz Mahmood's minivan was discovered at 12:35 a.m. July 8 in the 8600 block of Clinton. His body was in the back of the vehicle. An undetermined amount of cash was missing.
