Recently by Laura BuchtelA cluster of strong thunderstorms moved through the metro area around lunchtime today, but that area has since moved into the marine waters off the coast of St. Bernard parish. Expect some more thunderstorms to develop on the Northshore, and around coastal Louisiana and Mississippi. Right now the threat for rain across the metro New Orleans area has diminished. ...It sounds like a subjective question, but a thunderstorm has to reach certain limits. Here is the criteria for a severe thunderstorm: Hail that is 3/4 of an inch or greater in diameter Winds 58 miles per hour or greater Tornadoes ...We'll get a brief break today from the rain, and temperatures are going to soar into the low 90s this afternoon. Watch the storms developing in Kansas and Missouri today...those are going to be heading south, and will bring rain to Louisiana tomorrow afternoon and night. Some of the storms could be heavy again, so be on alert and don't drive down flooded streets. ...We're seeing a wet pattern across the Southeast, with rain chances going up each afternoon, and towards the weekend. Today we'll see a 30% chance. Any thunderstorm can produce a quick inch or two and street flooding will be a possibility. By Friday and the weekend, rain chances go up to 50-60%. Keep the rain gear with you...as you dodge those rain drops! ...Under this persistent high pressure system, the heat has been building each afternoon. That pattern will continue through the weekend, so be prepared for more 90s with very little rain. The models do show a shift in the pattern by the middle of next week, when more Gulf moisture will stream Northward and give us better daily rain chances.
