New Orleans International Airport recorded a record rain of 3.68 inches Saturday. The weather is on track for a good New Year's Eve forecast with good visibilities for fireworks. Grab a light jacket or sweater if you're headed out the door... temperatures will be on the cool side this evening with temperatures around 61 at 7pm, dropping to 55 by midnight. 2007 will begin on a sunny note for SE Louisiana with sunny skies and temperatures in the 50s. Good football weather... both on the field and off! ... The National Weather Service has issued an urban and small stream advisory for Jefferson and Orleans Parish through 9pm. A band of heavy rainfall could produce an additional 1-2" of rain in the next hour causing flooding in poor drainage areas including the cities of Timberlane... Metairie... Marrero... Harvey... Avondale... New Orleans and New Orleans East. A flash flood watch is also in effect for these areas. ...A tornado watch has been extended until 8pm for SE Lousiana and Southern Mississippi. A slow moving line of thunderstorms moving easterly across the forecast area has been known to produce damaging winds, locally heavy rainfall and dangerous lightning. A flash flood watch is in effect until Sunday morning. A surface low that developed over the Gulf of Mexico and ejected clouds and light rain into our area this Christmas Eve will move over SE Louisiana tonight. In front of the low, temperatures have been rising this evening, in advance of a warm front. Christmas Day, the weather changes rapidly, with cold and windy conditions expected. Temperatures will be in the 50's but it will feel cooler due to brisk, northerly winds. Periods of light... A light steady rain continues across portions of the metro area... but the flood watch for SE Louisiana has been cancelled as the threat of heavy downpours has passed. The chance of rain tonight is 30 percent. The main focus of the forecast is now strong winds and cool temperatures. Christmas Day looks cloudy, windy and cool, with wind chill temperatures in the 40's. There is a slight chance for light rain Christmas Day. ...***FLOOD WATCH THROUGH THIS EVENING. WITH NEARLY SATURATED SOILS AND UP TO FOUR INCHES OF RAIN POSSIBLE SUNDAY... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SLIDELL HAS ISSUED A FLOOD WATCH FOR THE FOLLOWING PARISHES AND COUNTIES THROUGH THIS EVENING: LIVINGSTON, TANGIPAHOA, ST. TAMMANY, ASSUMPTION, ASCENSION, ST. JAMES, ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST, ST. CHARLES, TERREBONE, LAFOURCHE, JEFFERSON, ORLEANS, ST. BERNARD, PLAQUEMINES... HARRISON AND HANCOCK COUNTIES*... A line of thunderstorms stretching from north of Baton Rouge down through Terrebonne Parish will provide some heavy rainfall in the next two hours. We expect this line to dump anywhere from 1/2" to 1" of rainfall within that time frame. Heavy rain is possible today with isolated thunderstorms. Most of the area should expect measurable precipitation. Otherwise it will be cloudy, windy and cold. It looks like conditions will improve for ... We're seeing more heavy rain in the overnight hours... but it looks like most of the heavy activity may clear out in time for the Friday morning commute. As fog continues to reduce visibilities across SE Lousiana and the coastal areas, the National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory for these areas. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, stay a safe distance from the car in front of you, and use low beam headlights. I will have an update on your visibilities ... Visibilities are already reduced across the area tonight as a result of fog. No advisories have been issued by the National Weather Service for SE Louisiana yet, however dense fog could be a problem for the Monday morning commute. Sunday morning, the fog burned off relatively quickly, giving way to sunny skies and warm temperatures... already reaching the 70s by noon. Expect warmer than average temperatures for most of the week. A cold front moving through Friday will bring cooler temperatures for next weekend. ...Visibilities are already down in Boothville. Coastal areas could see thick fog once again tonight. However, development is expected to be patchy... and burn off earlier Sunday morning. Expect mostly clear skies this Saturday. Fog will develop once again this Saturday night, but expect patchy dense fog. A freeze warning has been issued for Upper Terrebonne, Upper Lafourche, St. James, Assumption and St. John the Baptist Parishes.
