What is a Ridge of High Pressure?

1:29 PM Sun, Jun 08, 2008 |
Dawn Brown

A typical forecast here at Channel 4 includes "H's" and "L's" depending on what is happening with the weather. Generally, an "H" for high pressure means fair weather, and an "L" means stormy weather. But, of course, that's not always the case. These highs and lows that we draw on the map refer to what is happening at the surface. For the past two weeks, the meterologists here have been spending a lot of time talking about a st...

Persistent high pressure is allowing for hot & humid conditions to remain over our region through the weekend. High temperatures once again this afternoon will be in the 90-95 degree range. Combine the afternoon highs with dewpoint temperatures in the mid 70s, and we are seeing "feels like" temperatures in the upper 90s to 100 degrees. Breezy conditions once again this Friday afternoon.

The models do show a shift in the pattern by the ...

Hot Weather Continues...Any Relief In Sight?

3:22 PM Thu, Jun 05, 2008 |
Laura Buchtel

Under this persistent high pressure system, the heat has been building each afternoon. That pattern will continue through the weekend, so be prepared for more 90s with very little rain. The models do show a shift in the pattern by the middle of next week, when more Gulf moisture will stream Northward and give us better daily rain chances.

Right now the tropics are quiet, and look to stay that way for the next few days.

It's not a cool breeze... but it'll have to do...

11:41 AM Thu, Jun 05, 2008 |
Dawn Brown

Another hot and humid day with heat indices near the triple digits is in store for SE Lousiana today. Afternoon highs will range from 90-95 degrees. We started our morning lows near 80 degrees!

The main difference today... the breeze. A strong storm system to our North and West is increasing the southerly wind flow today. In fact, small craft is urged to exercise caution in the next 24 hours along coastal and lake wate...

Hot Hot Hot...any Rain in Sight??

5:03 PM Wed, Jun 04, 2008 |
Laura Buchtel

Rain chances will go up SLIGHTLY towards the weekend...just at 20-30%. This pesky high pressure over the Southeast will be staying around for awhile. Afternoon highs each day this week have been in the upper 80s and low 90s... no change in that either.

We need the rain...none recorded yet for June, as we are already behind in rainfall for the month by 0.80"

11:39 AM Wed, Jun 04, 2008 |
Jonathan Myers

With a tropical airmass in place this afternoon, the combination of the hot temperatures this afternoon along with high humidity levels will make highs near 90° this afternoon feel more like around 100°. Although this isn't uncommon during the summer, with these types of heat indicies it it advisable to drink plenty of water and delay strenuous activity until the evening or early morning hours.

The First Couple Days Of Hurricane Season '08 Quiet Down

12:30 PM Mon, Jun 02, 2008 |
Jonathan Myers

Just a couple of days before the official beginning of the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season, Tropical Storm Arthur formed in the western Caribbean Sea. Arthur, thankfully, made landfall on the Mexican Coast, weakening it to a remnant low over the past 24 hours. Aside from this decaying feature now locked in over inland Mexico, the tropics are very quiet - great news as we begin to move into the early tropical season.

Start of Hurricane Season; Hot Weather This Sunday

10:49 AM Sun, Jun 01, 2008 |
Laura Buchtel

Well, it's June 1st. Start of the 2008 hurricane season. And we already have our first Atlantic storm, Arthur. Fortunately for us, Arthur is going to stay over the Yucatan peninsula and not bother the lower 48. Unfortunately for the residents over in Mexico and Belize, heavy rainfall and mudslides will be a problem. Expect the storms to gradually weaken as it moves westerly over the next 24 hours.

Back at home, it is HOT today! Highs w...
