Tropical Storm Arthur, the first named storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, has formed over the far western Caribbean Sea. At 1 PM, it was located at 18.3 N latitude, 88.6 W longitude or about 50 miles NNW of Belize City and about 185 miles SW of Cozumel, Mexico. The good news is that steering currents and high pressure over the Gulf South off to the north are forcing Arthur off to the WNW at 8 MPH. With this track the storm will be moving over land and dissipating over the Yucatan Peninsula later today and Sunday. The weakened storm may re-emerge into the Bay of Campeche into the new week, but steering currents and high pressure off to the north of the storm should keep it barelling westward toward Central Mexico and well away from the United States. |
