Tropical Storm Arthur Forms

1:20 PM Sat, May 31, 2008 |
Jonathan Myers

Tropical Storm Arthur, the first named storm of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, has formed over the far western Caribbean Sea. At 1 PM, it was located at 18.3 N latitude, 88.6 W longitude or about 50 miles NNW of Belize City and about 185 miles SW of Cozumel, Mexico.

The good news is that steering currents and high pressure over the Gulf South off to the north are forcing Arthur off to the WNW at 8 MPH. With this track the storm ...

The names Dean, Felix, and Noel, three of the most devastating storms of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, were retired by members of the 30th Session of the World Meteorological Organization's Regional Association IV Hurricane Committee during its annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.

The committee issues a list of potential names for tropical cyclones every six years and for 2013, Dean, Felix, and Noel have been replaced with Do...

Mostly Dry and Mostly Hot

Little to no rain chance through Weekend with large upper high over us. Rain chances are less than 10% so we are not really including the chance. There may be one shower or thunderstorm popping up, but not enough to warrant a 10%. Highs will be in the 90 to lower 90 degree range.

Carl Arredondo

It will feel like summer with highs in the upper 80s to around 90 and only isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms. A reminder that any thunderstorm with the amount of moisture in the atmosphere and the heat that we get in the afternoon can become strong with heavy downpours and lots of lightning.

Isolated Thunderstorms Develop

An isolated thunderstorm rumbled through portions of the metro area at around 6pm tonight... that activity is gone. However, a line of thunderstorms that developed over Southern Mississippi is now head to the Southwest in the general direction of St. Tammany Parish. Expect isolated showers and thunderstorms to roll through Slidell at about 9pm, then there is the possibility that some of these showers could continue across the lake, although it...

Hot & Humid Through Memorial Day

1:31 PM Sun, May 25, 2008 |
Dawn Brown

Boy... dewpoints climbed to 77 degrees this afternoon. It's hot & humid outside. Meteorologists talk about the dewpoint a lot here in SE Lousiana... mainly because it gives us a lot of information. It's not that important to the viewer with the exception that when it climbs above 65 degrees in the afternoon, generally most people feel uncomfortable. It's harder for the body to cool down, because the amount of moisture in the air doesn't allow ...

Temperatures warmed to the low 80s across the area today, expect upper 80s Monday. A warm, Southwesterly wind will bring hot, dry area to the region tomorrow.

Study says global warming not worsening hurricanes...

Increasing Clouds... Shower Possible

1:26 PM Sat, May 17, 2008 |
Dawn Brown

Clouds continue to filter into the region from the South and West, associated with another storm system digging into the Southwestern United States. It's not a very strong system, but because it is sending clouds in our direction, there is the possibility of some light rain across parts of the area tonight.

A cooler day on tap with highs in the upper 70s, a nice break for the middle of May in SE Louisiana. Some cloud cover will linger ...

9:04 AM Mon, May 12, 2008 |
Laura Buchtel

A great start to the workweek with less humid air, and temperatures barely hitting 80 today. Our normal high for May 12 is 84, so we'll be below that. And the record is 91 back in 2000...we won't be anywhere near that. Enjoy this dry, pleasant weather before the humidity and rain creeps back in by mid-week.

Perfect Mother's Day Gift...

11:01 AM Sun, May 11, 2008 |
Dawn Brown

The weather! Boy, it is turning out to be a beautiful day. The cold front swept through the area between 8 and 10am this morning, dropping the dewpoint from the mid 70s to the mid 50s. That's quite a difference. It was a very strong cold front which caused severe weather across much of the Central Plains and Southeastern States. However, by the time it reached SE Lousiana, the front didn't support much in the way of rainfall.

I did exp...

After a warm and muggy day in the 80's Thursday, big-time heat and humidity are on the way for Friday and Saturday. With typical highs for this time of year around 85, we'll be running a good 5 degrees or so above average with highs reaching around 90 on both Friday and Saturday. By the way, records at both Audubon and Louis Armstrong International are in the low 90's both days, so those could be in jeopardy. There's only a slight chance of...

Gotta' Get Out!

It's one of those days where you have to dream up something to do outdoors, even if it's just taking a walk.

High pressure at the surface and in the upper levels of the atmosphere will dominate our forecast over the next several days. The high is positioned to our North, which allows for less humid conditions as continental air is pushed into our region.

The high will shift East eventually and the winds will shift to the Southe...

Jazz Fest resumes again today, to humid conditions and warm afternoon temperatures in the mid 80s this afternoon. Rain is not expected today, with only a 10% chance across SE LA.
