Question from Paul

4:55 PM Thu, Feb 22, 2007 |
Carl Arredondo

Based on your crystal ball, when will we have our last freeze of the year?

Paul,
There is no way to tell when it will happen. I usually advise people who want to plant that it is best to wait until after Easter to avoid any late freezes. Historically, the latest freeze on record at Audubon was March 27 in 1955. The latest freeze at the airport in Kenner was April 8 in 1971. Easter this year is April 8th.

Active El Nino Pattern

9:22 PM Thu, Feb 08, 2007 |
Carl Arredondo

El Nino keeps a jetstream over the south and that is an active pattern. Clouds, moisture, and low pressure areas will continue to PARADE across the south. Timing of the rain chances are difficult with the speed that some of these disturbances move. You will see a changing forecast each day.

A low will move across the area on Friday and bring a 20% chance for light rain or isol'd showers. It will be cooler than the past two...

Here Comes The Sun

2:09 PM Tue, Feb 06, 2007 |
Laura Buchtel

Nice sunshine back in the Big Easy and Gulf Coast. Temperatures have responded nicely, and we're in the mid 60s today! We are right smack in between two jet streams: the northern polar jet is over the mid-west, where it is cold and snowy. The southern branch of the jet stream is over the Gulf of Mexico and Florida, where rain showers have been keeping the Sunshine State a little damp. In between sits Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. And all...

Where is the Sun?

12:51 PM Sun, Feb 04, 2007 |
Dawn Brown

Cold air continues to funnel into the region from the north. That will continue for the next few days until a change in the upper air pattern allows a ridge to build in, bringing fair weather and warmer tempe...

High pushing rain to our South

11:20 AM Sat, Feb 03, 2007 |
Dawn Brown

We still have clouds out there, keeping temperatures in the 40s and edging into the 50s today... but rain is off the coast. That southern stream of moisture, courtesy of El Nino is streaming clouds and rain into the Gulf today. Florida is getting some rain today. A surface high pressure is building in, keeping the atmosphere stable across the SE. That means we have a 5 day pattern of dry weather.

Saturday will have clouds & sunshine, ...
