With all the rain we've had around lately, I've been thinking about some of the phrases we use to describe the weather...and I wondered where "raining like cats and dogs" came into our vocabulary. Here's what I found courtesy phrases.org. The phrase likely originated in 17th century England. The streets were not particularly clean, and a good, heavy rain would usually wash dead animals down the streets. The people did not actually see the animals falling from the sky, but the phrase popped up upon seeing the animals floating down the streets. Something to think about on a rainy day! |
