Another low pressure system will develop and ride along the Southern Branch of the jet stream (thanks El Nino) and bring us rain tonight and tomorrow. What a show in the sky today due to the cirrus clouds made up of ice crystals. ...We officially hit 32 degrees this morning at Armstrong Int'l Airport, even if it was just for a few minutes. Temps were cold all across SE LA this morning: 21 degrees in Bogalusa, 22 degrees in Poplarville, and 24 degrees in Slidell. That's cold! This afternoon, we were seeing low to mid 40s across the region, with sunshine. It will be cold again tonight, with some clouds blowing in. Lows north of the lake 35, south of the lake 39. If... After a cold start to a new work week, rain will be back by Tuesday afternoon. Mid-week looks wet, with rain lingering into Thursday and Friday. Light, moderate and heavy rainfall fell across the area today. The band of rain showers associated with a Gulf low is now moving off to the East. A light freeze expected Monday morning north of the lake with upper 20's and south of the lake in the mid 30's with frost. Highs in Monday in the low 50's. ...That pretty much sums it up. Broad sunshine today, temps in the upper 50s to 60, it was a perfect New Orleans January day! Tonight will be still mostly clear, but southeast winds with pick up tonight ahead of a developing low pressure system over Texas. Your Saturday will start pleasant enough, with clouds increasing through the morning hours. Rain will develop out west by the noon hour, with rain spreading into SE LA that afternoon an... With all the rain we've had around lately, I've been thinking about some of the phrases we use to describe the weather...and I wondered where "raining like cats and dogs" came into our vocabulary. Here's what I found courtesy phrases.org. The phrase likely originated in 17th century England. The streets were not particularly clean, and a good, heavy rain would usually wash dead animals down the streets. The people did not actually see ... After another cloudy/chilly/wet day, improving conditions are coming soon. The El Nino pattern is certainly creating those wetter conditions, as well as below normal temperatures for the Gulf Coast region. Sunny skies will dominate our area into the weekend, followed by another system into Saturday. We use several different models, with some weighing in better than others. For example, the GFS model (Global Forecast System) is usually good in handling this moisture coming from the Southern Branch of the jetstream in the long term. We also look at other models, like the NGM (Nested Grid Model), the Eta, RUC, UKMET, E... If you check out Pinpoint Radar or My Radar on wwltv.com this afternoon, you'll see more rain developing over SW LA and Texas. It is all headed this way, after a lull in the activity this afternoon. If you are going out this evening, take the umbrella with you, as rain will push in tonight, and will be around through tomorrow too. The morning commute to work will be a bit soggy. Rain chances increase on Wednesday with a low pressure area in the Gulf moving east across the Gulf. Our rain chances will increase to 50% on Wednesday with breezy 50's for highs. Thursday morning rain chances diminish to 40% with some sunshine expected in the afternoon an... Light to moderate rainfall continues across the area Sunday night into Monday afternoon. A brief break is possible Monday into Tuesday. After a warm and muggy Sunday, temperatures will once again be on the cool side for most of the week.
The warm front has passed, now a cold front is bearing down on SE Louisiana, bringing rain showers and cooler temperatures tonight into tomorrow once again. Light rain will continue to fall throughout the day. Expect another disturbance to provide a chance of showers on Monday, then a brief break Tuesday, before another round on Wednesday. SAINTS VERSUS BEARS: NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: SOLDIER FIELD It looks like temperatures will warm Saturday night into Sunday in association with a warm front and low pressure system that will be bearing down on SE Louisiana Saturday night into Sunday. It looks like scattered showers will start moving in Saturday night. The rain chances increase Sunday afternoon. We have a 30% chance for thunderstorms Sunday afternoon as well. Afternoon highs on Sunday are expected to be around 70. The chance of rain ext... Cloudy skies will remain for today and rain chances increase on Sunday. 20-30% for light rain all of today, then the chance for more rain goes to 70% on Sunday. This is courtesy of El Nino...we usually get cold and rainy winters in Louisiana. This pattern stays through next week, with little sunshine in the forecast. Is it any coincidence it's 80 degrees and sunny in Miami? Anybody else ready for Florida?? ...Upper level winds and moisture continue to feed into the SE associated with the Southern Jetstream, as part of the El Nino pattern. Expect mostly cloudy skies today and into Friday with a chance for spotty showers. A change in the pattern Saturday as a low forms over Mexico and then moves closer to SE Lousiana. A warm front ahead of the low may trigger some thunderstorms Saturday night. Sunday, the chance of showers is currently 80% fo... It was another very chilly and windy day. A few sprinkles were recorded here and there, but it was mainly cloudy. Tomorrow will be a bit warmer, with highs in the 50s. The clouds will hang around, though, along with a chance for a spotty shower or two. ...With strong winds out of the north, the "feels like" temperature has been in the 20s and now 30s for most of the day. Expect winds to die down tonight. Temperatures this afternoon are in the 40s, but again, with strong winds, it doesn't feel that warm. Temperatures this morning are having trouble staying the 40s... as a cold, artic air mass continues to drop into our forecast region. A winter weather advisory is in effect for western Lousiana... and we may see a wintry mix... of rain/sleet on the northshore and some western parishes this afternoon and overnight. Expect temperatures in the upper 30s, especially on the northshore for later this afternoon and then dropping overnight. If you are... As of 2pm, it was 74 in metro New Orleans, and 43 in Lake Charles! The front is now approaching us from the west, and we'll see sharp temperatures drops over the evening hours. For those of you traveling to Chicago for the Saints game, it will be rough driving ... Of course... you can read all about the Saints game in our Sports Blog... but the expression, "Saints fans are on cloud 9", led me to look up the expression. The popularity of the phrase is attributed to a radio show in the 1950s, a song by George Harrison, as well as a song by the Temptations among other things. However, phrase sources attribute the source of "cloud 9" to the 1896 publishing of the International Cloud Atlas, which ga... No records... but a very warm Saturday across the region. We will see mostly cloudy skies tonight, a mild and muggy evening. Tomorrow, expect another warm day with highs in the upper 70s and humid conditions. Skies will be mostly cloudy again. Temperatures will begin falling Monday afternoon. Some high temperatures across the area today. New Orleans International Airport: 77... record 82 Saturday will be a mild one, with mostly cloudy skies, and a 20% chance for a stray shower. Temps around noon will be in the mid 70s, then dropping into the 60s by kickoff. Winds will be a bit "brees-y" out of the SE 10-18 mph. We won't cool off much overnight Saturday, so your walk back to your car after the Saints' victory will be a mild one...overnight lows will be around 64. By Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures will drop to 15-20 degrees below normal. We're watching a cold front develop across the Plains States today, and this front will bring our next chance for rain, as well as COLD weather. The models today were slowing the front down, and it will probably stall over Arkansas/Tennessee this weekend. The rain will develop in earnest late Monday, with rain chances up Tuesday and possibly Wednesday, depending on the timing. One thing for sure, it WILL get cold next week, colder than... Patchy dense fog is developing, expect visibilities to be reduced overnight and into tomorrow morning. A southerly flow has developed... warm, moist air is filtering into the region. Temperatures will remain in the 60s overnight. Along with fog, isolated thunderstorms are possible overnight. A few isolated showers will move across the area today... so parade goers should keep the umbrella handy. Another area of low pressure will be moving across the area on Sunday bringing another round of showers or thunderstorms. Sunday's system is not expected to be as strong as Thursday's system. Highs around 70. ...In the wake of last night's storms, high pressure has moved in, providing beautiful blue skies and temps in the lower 70s. This will be short lived, though, with fog developing overnight, and showers developing tomorrow. Another front will swing through to the North, bring rain chances up for Sat, Sat night, and early Sunday. This front is not as strong, so no severe weather is expected, and rain totals will be lower too. Behind the fr... Showers and thunderstorms continue to move across coastal Lousiana and Mississippi this morning. Some lingering showers could provide wet roads for the morning commute... but it looks like we'll see clearing skies for your Friday forecast. I'm Dawn Brown in the Channel 4 Weather Department. It is 3am, and I've been watching a line of thunderstorms continue to fire up from Lake Pontchartrain to Lower Lafourche Parish. The possiblity of lightning and heavy downpours continues with this line that has stalled over the coastal parishes. A special marine warning continues for areas of coastal Mississippi. Behind this line of storms, a cold front is mak... A Tornado Watch has been issued for the following parishes/counties until 4am Friday: The threat of tornadoes will remain through the overnight hours, even with the weakening line of storms. Stay tuned to Channel 4 or wwl... A Tornado Watch has been issued for all of SE LA and Southern Mississippi until 9pm tonight. Look for storms to move through this evening, with some possibly turning severe. Main threats would be damaging winds and heavy rain. A Flash Flood Watch continues for all of SE LA through noon on Friday. An additional 1-2" of rain is expected over already saturated ground. Swollen creeks and rivers are at ban... FLASH FLOOD WATCH THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING More rain is on the way, with a strong storm system lining up along the Texas and Louisiana coastline. As this system moves closer, the rain will pick up in intensity and coverage starting this afternoon, and lasting overnight and into early Friday morning. A few strong to severe will be possible this afternoon, along with 2-4 inches of rain, with some higher amounts possible. ...A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for all of SE LA from Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Models are indicating that anywhere from 3-5" rain totals are possible again with another soggy system heading into Louisiana. The rain will be falling on saturated ground, and rivers and streams are still full from last week's rains. If you live near a flood plain, or in an area conducive to flooding, be sure to monit... With over 10" of rain in December, the area has seen plenty of rainfall in the last several weeks. The ground cannot hold another heavy rain, and therefore any significant rain event will create plenty of run-off. Another problem is the rivers and bayous are completely full, so any run-off will lead to additional flooding across the area. Flash Flood Watches are in effect for all of SE Louisiana and coastal Miss, with the threat for ... We struggled to hit 50 today, as some mid layer cloud cover helped to keep things cool. Expect the clouds to move in and out tonight, so lows won't be as cold. Maybe some patchy frost north of the lake, otherwise, temps will be in the 40s south. Rain developing late Wednesday night, with chances hitting 80% by morning. Overnight Wednesday night could bring some severe weather, so keep an eye on that as we progress through the week. Rai... Enjoy the sunshine today and part of tomorrow since another storm system will develop Wednesday along the Texas coastline, then move into Louisiana on Thursday. There will be heavy rain possible, with several inches of additional rain. With many of the rivers and bayous already swollen, additional heavy rain will create some problems. We will be watching this system closely. ...A cooler airmass has moved into SE LA behind a very slow moving cold front. Temps around 1pm were only at 50 degrees in the French Quarter. Nice blue skies, and a light breeze from the Northwest accompanied the weather change. This week will be pleasant, with mild temps through Thursday, and a chance of rain Thursday and Friday.
