Tonight is the official start of autumn. The autumnal equinox is the day when daytime and nighttime are closest to being equal in length. At 11:03 Friday night, our seasons change. The vernal equinox is in the spring, on March 20 next year. That is the other day of the year when the sunrise and sunset times are equal. The solstices occur twice a year also: the winter solstice is in December, and is the longest night. The summer solstice is in June, and is the longest day. Many people think that during the equinoxes, you can balance an egg on its end. While you can usually get an egg to stand on its end, it has nothing to do with the equinoxes...you can balance an egg any day of the year (it just takes a LOT of patience!) |
