Waterspout Question

I have a question regarding water spouts. I drive across the causeway a couple times a week and was wondering what should someone do if they spot a water spout while driving across the causeway while driving? I have heard on previous news cast that some have been spotted from the causeway and some from I-10 over the spillway.
Thank you,
Amy Trapp

Amy,
After talking this one over with some of the staff and someone from the National Weather Service, we agree that you should continue driving and not stop unless you were able to justify that the waterspout was coming directly to you. Many mariners speak of seeing waterspouts many times on the lake and surrounding water ways. Waterspouts usually are not very strong windwise. Most of the time they look worse than what they are. They develop more from the warm moist air that a mass of water provides. They are not from the violent thunderstorms that produce tornadoes in severe weather situations. Stopping on the Causeway or Spillway may cause more harm than the waterspout. So our advice is to keep driving. The National Weather Service stated that they don't recall any waterspout hitting or damaging the Causeway or causing injury or accidents.
