Pinpoint Doppler vs MyRadar

OK, what is the difference? Pinpoint Doppler on wwltv.com is Channel 4's own radar. That is what you see live on Channel 4. The radar is owned by us and the tower is located in Gretna. When you see Pinpoint Doppler on Channel 4, that is where the rain is happening right then. Pinpoint Doppler on wwltv.com is not live, but updates probably more frequently than any other radar on the web. Since the tower is located in Gretna, you will see ground clutter around the radar site. Ground clutter will look like rain usually in a circular pattern around Gretna or the southshore area centered on Gretna. The ground clutter is the radar beam as it is leaving the tower at a low angle bouncing off trees or building around the radar site. That won't go away. The only way to tell if it is ground clutter or real rain is to watch the radar in motion. The ground clutter pattern will not move. Rain will move in a direction. Since you can't zoom in on Pinpoint like we can on Channel 4, we added 3 close in views of the area.

MyRadar on wwltv.com is another tool offered to the public. This one you can zoom in to an area you want to see. We also added 4 closer views of Southeast Louisiana that you can zoom in on as well. With MyRadar, you can customize the radar with the options available. MyRadar does not use Channel 4's Pinpoint Doppler. This is the National Weather Service's Doppler out of Slidell, so the radar site in in Slidell and that is where you will find the ground clutter pattern. There will not be any clutter in the New Orleans area.

We hope that you will find both Pinpoint Doppler and MyRadar on wwltv.com useful tools to keep you on top of the weather situation.
