Wednesday Tropics & Weather

The weak area of low pressure that has been affecting the western Gulf of Mexico is located over SE Texas. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are located over SE Texas and SW Louisiana. No development will happen since the low is over land and continues to move north. No other development is expected elsewhere in the tropics. There is a wave just east of the Lesser Antilles, but upper level winds are not favorable.

What a difference a year makes in the tropics!
In July of 2005 there were 5 tropical systems (3 hurricanes & 2 Tropical Storms) in the Atlantic Basin. Compare that to the East Pacific which only had 2 tropical systems (2 Tropical Storms).
Now in July of this year, so far we've had 1 tropical system (1 Tropical Storm) in the Atlantic Basin. In contrast the East Pacific has had 4 tropical systems (3 hurricanes & 1 Tropical Storm). A flip flop of seasons from last year to this year.

The upper level winds have been stronger this season in the Atlantic Basin as opposed to last year. Partly due to the absence of La Nina this year. In a La Nina season, winds are lighter in the tropics and that aided to the increased number of systems last year.

Rain chances should be around 30% for the next couple of days. Then increase slightly over the weekend to Monday. Highs back up to the low to mid 90's with fewer showers and thunderstorms around.
