Wednesday Tropics & Weather

2:19 PM Wed, Jul 26, 2006 |
Carl Arredondo

The weak area of low pressure that has been affecting the western Gulf of Mexico is located over SE Texas. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are located over SE Texas and SW Louisiana. No development will happen since the low is over land and continues to move north. No other development is expected elsewhere in the tropics. There is a wave just east of the Lesser Antilles, but upper level winds are not favorable.

Summer-Time Pattern Returns

6:48 AM Wed, Jul 26, 2006 |

Tuesday Night Tropical Update

9:19 PM Tue, Jul 25, 2006 |
Carl Arredondo

Pressures are still low over extreme south Texas to near Baffin Bay. A low may still try to form just off the Texas coast and will have to be watched. There is still alot of tropical moisture and upper level winds can favor development. We can still expect rain scattered about for Wednesday. IF a depression forms, it would move north towards the Texas coast. Upper level high pressure will build in from the east and start to dry things ou...

Tropical Moisture Continues Along the Gulf Coast

6:50 AM Tue, Jul 25, 2006 |

The disturbance in the SW Gulf just offshore from Mexico remains disorganized. Showers and storms are flaring up, but with the proximity of this system being close to land, strengthening remains unlikely. If this system were to move further into the Gulf, it may develop further, maybe into a Tropical Depression.

Our main concern will be the possible heavy rain through Wednesday.

...

Monday Tropics & Weather

1:54 PM Mon, Jul 24, 2006 |
Carl Arredondo

Ron asks, "Do you think that disturbance will pose any more of a threat than a rainmaker?? Just being cautious."
Ron, the area of disturbed weather in the western Gulf of Mexico will be watched for any development. A Hurricane Hunter plane was canceled today from going out there. With high pressure building in from the east, it appears that IF anything were to develop, it would stay to our west as the area moves north. We may still g...

Since earlier this morning, showers and storms have developed near an area of disturbed weather. Winds in the upper-levels remain unfavorable, but could change over the next few days. If the latest storm development remains consistent, it may indicate that some development is trying to occur.

Severe Thunderstom?

2:41 PM Fri, Jul 21, 2006 |
Carl Arredondo

Many times we get calls in the weathercenter on why we are not breaking in to inform the public on the severe thunderstorm going on in someone's area. The National Weather Service for the New Orleans area is located in Slidell. They issue the warnings for severe thunderstorms or tornadoes for our area. We then either cut into programming or run a crawl at the bottom of your screen or both. However, the thunderstorm has to be severe and fit...

Severe Thunderstorms

7:27 PM Wed, Jul 19, 2006 |
Carl Arredondo

All day heating into the mid 90's and an outflow boundary from thunderstorms in Mississippi came across the lake late in the afternoon and sparked intense thunderstorms on the southshore. Some wind damage reported in Metairie around I-10 and Bonnabel and around Williams Blvd. in Kenner. Hail was reported as well. A severe thunderstorm warning for Orleans and St Bernard parishes until 8pm has been issued.

...

Severe Thunderstorm Threat

2:47 PM Wed, Jul 19, 2006 |
Carl Arredondo

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for the Mississippi counties in and around McComb and north of that area until 8pm. No Southeast Louisiana parishes are in the watch area. There may be strong thunderstorms in Washington and northern Tangipahoa parishes today. All of Southeast Louisiana has about a 40% chance for thunderstorms until around sunset.

Tropical Storm Beryl is still the only system of concern in the tropics. It is...

Weather Changes.......

8:30 AM Wed, Jul 19, 2006 |

Daily storms will continue, isolated though. It seems like those who catch in on the rain pick up 1-2" in a short period of time, while others continue to bake in the sun.

This pattern will not change through week, but a system will be moving our way for the weekend, which should help to raise those chances for rain.

...

T.S. Beryl

4:22 PM Tue, Jul 18, 2006 |
Carl Arredondo

The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Tropical Depression #2 to Beryl. Not a threat to the Gulf of Mexico. The 4pm advisory has it as T.D. #2, but data after the advisory was issued indicated it has been upgraded. It won't be reflected until the 7pm intermediate advisory. Beryl will skirt the eastern seaboard before moving out to sea.

Tropics Getting Started

2:22 PM Tue, Jul 18, 2006 |

A very busy July last year. Today, we have only the 2nd tropical depression of the season off the coast of North Carolina. This system may become Tropical Storm Beryl later today or on Wednesday. There is another very strong tropical wave that came...

Summer Time Heat and Humidity is Here to Stay...

7:57 AM Tue, Jul 18, 2006 |

Temperatures will range from the low 90's near the water to the upper 90's across inland areas. Heat index will be from 100-108, so stay hydrated with plenty of water. Moisture and lots of heating will lead to some thunderstorms developing each afternoon. Some storms may organize and produce some very heavy downpours, lightening and gusty winds.

As far as the tropics, an area of storms in the Atlantic east of the Carolinas may becom...

Normal Summer Pattern?

1:55 PM Mon, Jul 17, 2006 |
Carl Arredondo

I can't seem to keep anything other than a summer forecast for this week. About a 40% chance for afternoon thunderstorms. Any one day, the coverage may be higher or lower, but daily thunderstorms will be around. A reminder that with the heat of the summer, any thunderstorm can become strong and produce street flooding, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and small hail. You won't hear us say in every weathercasts that some of the thunderstorm...

Not a Bad Weekend

3:11 PM Fri, Jul 14, 2006 |
Carl Arredondo

Our rain chances this weekend will be close to normal. The upper low is moving inland in Northern Mexico, but we will still have enough moisture over the weekend for a few afternoon thunderstorms, maybe less coverage on Sunday than Saturday.

No tropical activity expected over the next 2-3 days, but we will continue to watch the wave in the easter Caribbean.

A call from a viewer this afternoon described a ring around the sun....
