(NORTHSHORE)---State officials have released the final totals for the disaster food stamp program after both Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, with the numbers showing that Northshore residents received more than $25.6 million in assistance. The report indicates that in St. Tammany Parish, 24,242 households received slightly more than $9 million, with 2,235 applications denied. In Tangipahoa Parish, 22,069 families received more than $7.3 million, with 1,130 denials. Livingston Parish had the third most families receiving assistance, with 15,636 households getting help in obtaining more than $5.8 million, with 865 families denied. In Washington Parish, 8,556 households received more than $2.7 million in food stamps, with 694 families denied. And in St. Helena Parish, 1,883 families received more than $590 thousand in assistance, with 122 applications rejected. Statewide, the official report indicates that as a result of Gustav and Ike, 609,595 families received more than $208 million in benefits with 38,475 applicants denied. In all, state officials say that more than 1.5 million Louisiana residents received state food stamp help after the storms. |
