St. Tammany declares state of emergency; offers public info

(COVINGTON)---St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis has declared a state of emergency in anticipation of some type of effect from Hurricane Gustav.

"It's still too early to tell exactly how Gustav will impact St. Tammany," said Davis. "However, we must be prepared."

A Storm Information Line has been activated at 985.809.2300. Recorded information is available regarding sandbags, shelters, evacuation orders, and other pertinent information.

No shelters are open at this time. No evacuation has been ordered. Decisions regarding these possibilities will be made when the storm has taken a more definitive path.

Important closings in St. Tammany Parish:

• The Animal Services Shelter will close Saturday, August 30, and will remain closed until further notice.
• Public schools in St. Tammany will be closed on Tuesday, September 2.
• The 22nd Judicial District Court (Washington and St. Tammany Parishes) will be closed Tuesday, September 2.
• Slidell City Court is closed Tuesday, September 2.
• The Zoning Commission and Board of Adjustment meeting for Tuesday, September 2, has been cancelled.
• There is no reason to pre-register for the Special Needs Shelter at this time. Those with special needs and cannot evacuate due to health issues should monitor the media for shelter opening announcements. Those needing transportation to the Special Needs Shelter should call COAST at 985.327.0185.
