(NORTHSHORE)---With the potential of a strengthening Gustav approaching some part of the Louisiana coastline by Monday, September 1, the Louisiana State Police have released some reminders for citizens to prepare now in case evacuations are called later.

Troopers recommend the following steps to help you and your family be better prepared in case the storm approaches:

• Fill vehicle tanks prior to any departure.
• Check tires and maintain proper air pressure, including the spare.
• Check vehicle fluid levels and top them off.
• Equip your vehicle with jumper cables, vehicle jack, and lug wrench.
• Bring water and food with you.
• Do not attempt to tow unsafe or unnecessary trailers.
• When traveling on state highways, either before or during contra-flow, keep all lanes clear by moving vehicle crashes or stalled vehicles off of the roadway to continue uninterrupted traffic flow.

The State Police encourage the public to call the Louisiana State Police Hotline at 1.800.469.4828 for traffic or evacuation information, if one is called. Citizens call also dial 511 to receive information on travel advisories or road closures.
