(COVINGTON)---The effort to widen and enhance a busy section of LA 21, a fast-growing corridor on the western side of Covington, gained momentum recently when bids for the construction project were opened, according to St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis. Davis reports that the low bidder was Gilmore & Sons, with a bid on the project of $8.7 million. Officials say that the project will expand the roadway to four lanes with a center median running from Ochsner Blvd. to near Bootlegger Road. Davis says that the project is expected to take a year to complete, with most of the work being done a night to minimize the impact on that busy highway. "We will be working with business to lessen the impact of construction," said Davis. "Road improvements always come with the difficult construction period but we must all patiently work around the inconvenience. We cannot improve the road any other way." Davis adds that providing all paperwork is in order, the contract is usually awarded within 45 days after the bids are opened. He says that the project could begin as early as this fall. |
