(NEW ORLEANS)---Two women from Covington and a man from New Orleans have been indicted by a New Orleans federal grand jury on 15 counts of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, according to U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. U. S. Atty. Letten reports that 22-year-old Megan M. Merriman and 23-year-old Sara M. Smith, both of Covington, and 41-year-old Alvin L. Welch of New Orleans were indicted on Friday, July 25, for allegedly altering checks stolen from residential mail boxes to increase the amount and make them payable to themselves. Letten says that the checks were altered so as to make Merriman and Smith appear to be home health providers and Welch as a home repair or renovation person. Letten adds that the first count carries a five-year imprisonment and $250,000 fine, while counts two through 15 each carries up to 30 years in prison and a fine of not more than $1,000,000. |
