(KENTWOOD)---A Kentwood man is dead and his female companion remains in a Mississippi hospital suffering from a gunshot wound in what deputies say appears to be an attempted murder/ suicide case, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office.

Tangipahoa Parish Chief Deputy Dennis Pevey tells the Eyewitness News Northshore Bureau that 28-year-old Michael Dwayne Davis died from an apparent gunshot wound to the head and that 28-year-old Irma Taylor suffered a gunshot wound to the left shoulder area.

The shooting incident occurred shortly after 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, in the 73000 block of Hookfin Road near Kentwood. Chief Deputy Pevey reports that TPSO deputies and Kentwood Police officers responded to a disturbance with weapon call, with a Kentwood Police officer finding Davis lying in the middle of the road near 73100 Hookfin Road.

Chief Deputy Pevey says that as a TPSO deputy arrived, he heard the officer stating, "No, no, no" and then a gunshot rang out. As the deputy and officer approached Davis, Chief Deputy Pevey says that they saw Davis still holding a shotgun with what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound to the head.

The chief deputy says that deputies then entered the residence and found Taylor sitting on a couch suffering from a gunshot wound to the left shoulder area. He adds that deputies also found an unharmed female juvenile, who is apparently the daughter of Davis and Taylor, in the residence. Taylor was taken to a hospital in McComb for initial treatment, but was later taken to a hospital in Jackson where, at last report, she remains in stable condition.

Chief Deputy Pevey adds that the incident remains under investigation, but at this time appears to have been an attempted murder/suicide.

This is a very sad story, especially since I knew the people involved. I wish we had known just what was going on in Michael's head, so that we could have said or done something to help him out. The world lost a true soldier in Michael. You will be greatly missed.
