(DENHAM SPRINGS)---For the second time this year, a major specialty chemicals company is moving its headquarters from another state to Louisiana, according to Gov. Bobby Jindal. Rhode Island-based Bercen, Inc. will not only move its headquarters, but also its research and development labs, to Livingston Parish near Denham Springs. Gov. Jindal says that upon completing its move from Cranston, Rhode Island, to Louisiana, Bercen officials will expand their local manufacturing operation for a capital investment of $5 million along with 20 new jobs. Economic development officials say that Bercen provides products and services for the paper industry and already has a customer service department and manufacturing site in Denham Springs. They add that the expansion here was a perfect fit, citing the proximity with LSU in Baton Rouge and SLU in Hammond for recruitment of engineers and chemists, lower taxes, a thriving petrochemical industry, access to raw materials, a nearby customer base, and access to the Port of New Orleans. Gov. Jindal says that the recruitment effort to bring Bercen's headquarters here began a year ago and that the move is expected to be complete by Dec. 31, 2009. |
