St. Tammany Sheriff's Office warns of possible bank scam

Customers, and in some cases non-customers, of a local bank are being warned of a possible text-messaging scam on the Northshore, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Jack Strain has issued a warning for customers of Statewide Bank to not respond to a text message on their cellular phones. The message, according to Sheriff Strain, reads: "Your Statewide Bank account is closed due to unusual activity." The message then instructs the recipient to call a certain phone number.
Sheriff Strain advises that if anyone gave any account or credit card information out over the phone, he or she should contact Statewide Bank. Sheriff Strain also emphasizes that if anyone feels that he or she was a target of the scam, they should call the Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Strain adds that normally these types of scams occur through e-mail, and that using text messaging is highly unusual. He concludes by urging everyone to understand that the message is not legitimate.
