St. Tammany officials urge residents to call before buying FEMA housing

(COVINGTON)---St. Tammany Parish government officials are urging residents to call the Planning and Permit Departments before buying any FEMA mobile homes and park model travel trailers.
As FEMA prepares to sell some temporary housing units, Planning Department director Sidney Fontenot urges potential buyers to check and see if their property is zoned for mobile homes.
"Until our new zoning codes are applied across the parish, most mobile home placements require conditional use approval," said Fontenot. "It is a good idea to go through the conditional use process before you agree to purchase a mobile home."
As for the FEMA park model trailers, St. Tammany officials say no approvals will be issued. They maintain that the park model trailers do not meet building codes and will not be approved for any use, including storage.
