(PONCHATOULA)---The driver of a pickup truck is dead, and a passenger inside his vehicle remains in serious condition, after Ponchatoula Police apparently tried to stop the truck and the driver allegedly sped away at what officers maintain as a "high rate of speed", according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office.
Tangipahoa Chief Deputy Dennis Pevey reports that 21-year-old Joshua Michael Lejeune of Ponchatoula died as a result of the accident as he was ejected from the vehicle. The chief also says that a passenger inside the truck, Ashley Moran, no age or address available, had to be extricated from the truck and was last listed in serious condition at a Tangipahoa Parish hospital.
The accident happened shortly after midnight on Wednesday, May 28. Chief Deputy Pevey says that Ponchatoula Police maintain that they observed a truck, driven by Lejeune, leave a local club and travel "dangerously" along U. S. 51 in Ponchatoula.
Chief Pevey says that when police attempted to stop the truck, the vehicle sped off. A short while later, Chief Pevey says that the vehicle left the roadway and slammed into an oak tree near the intersection of Sisters Road and Yokum Road in the Ponchatoula area.
