(ABITA SPRINGS)---In an effort to help improve the natural habitat of wildlife and various species of trees and plant growth, officials with the Nature Conservancy in St. Tammany Parish are planning to burn some 40 acres of shrubs and thickets near Abita Springs today, Wednesday, May 28.
Scheduled to begin at noon, conservancy officials tell Eyewitness News that the "prescribed burn" will be carefully monitored, after having been planned by professionals specializing in habitat management. The fire will be set near Money Hill in the Abita Springs area.
Conservancy spokespeople say that other similar fires, designed to duplicate the random nature of lightning-induced fires, will be set over the next few weeks in an effort to clear away shrubs and thickets that tend to inhibit the growth and overall health of other plant and animal life.
