(COVINGTON)---A mid-morning fire along U. S. 190 in Covington resulted in serious damage to a mechanic shop, big problems for firefighters battling the blaze and a headache for commuters trying to make their way through the area.
It happened shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 21, at the Lawn and Saw Shop, located at 1412 N. U. S. 190 in Covington. Firefighters tell Eyewitness News that oil and gasoline apparently stored in the building, coupled with the fact that the structure was rather old, made it difficult to knock the fire down quickly.
Smoke from the fire could be seen throughout the Covington-Mandeville-Abita Springs area and, at one point, forced the closure of portions of U. S. 190. Firefighters from other areas also had to be called in to help fight the fire.
No injuries were reported.
