Tom Planchet: February 2009 ArchivesESPN's Bill Simmons - love him or loathe him - has an interesting (and long) column on the NBA's financial woes and he doesn't spare the Hornets' and their attempt to trade Tyson Chandler. If you are a pro basketball fan, I recommend reading this and judging future moves by all NBA teams accordingly. ...There's no question that Tyson Chandler was stung by the trade to Oklahoma City, but a report in Bleacher Report suggests it could spark a big second half. I almost have to agree. The attempted trade signaled to Chandler that the team wasn't satisfied with his level of play - at least at the cost they were paying - and if he l... One thing that has been missing from the Hornets this year is a long winning streak. The longest they've had is four straight, which has happened only twice. Last year, they had four, five-game win streaks and a nine-game streak that took them from 23-12 to 32-12 and separated them into the upper echelon, where they stayed. This year, a nine-game streak would firmly entrench them in a playoff spot, but it seems anytime they get some momentum... In the NBA's Western Conference, the Hornets are tied for the final playoff spot if the season ended now and they are just a game and a half ahead of Phoenix. While they'd be shoo-ins in the East, this isn't the East and the Hornets haven't been hot. Of course, the Hornets are also only 3 games out of the third playoff spot, so this is shaping up like last year's race. ...On Chris Mannix's list of winners and losers after the NBA trade deadline he lists the Hornets as a winner for retaining Chandler and the Thunder as losers for nixing a deal that would have given them four, solid young players over an injury that has never concerned the Hornets. ...
Chris Broussard and Marc Stein of ESPN break down the Chandler no-deal and say that the big man is upset and doesn't understand why the deal didn't go through. He also has a telling quote about wanting to hurry up and play again for the Hornets, but after the trade, saying he would take his time to get back on the court. While he shouldn't play until he's healthy, the quot... ESPN's John Hollinger doesn't think the trade of Tyson Chandler for Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith will hurt the team in the short run, but he said he figured the Hornets for a low playoff seed and first round exit anyway. He said when it will really hurt will be next year when Wilcox and Smith leave and the Hornets have little money to bol... Now, you might ask yourself what someone with the London Free Press is doing commenting on the Hornets trade of Tyson Chandler for two journeymen players. My guess is the guy is a stringer, but anyway, he says the Hornets have thrown in the towel with a purely economic move. What surprises me most is that no one is talking about how this sits with Chr... At least according to John Hollinger's playoff odds. There are 9 teams vying for 8 playoff spots in the West, which is one fewer than last year. Hollinger projects the Hornets to finish with a 48-34 record and 7th in the West. My personal projection is 53-29, which would have them 4th in Hollinger's ratings. I think there's no question the Lakers are a lock for the top spot,... Whether All-Star point guard Chris Paul plays tonight against the Boston Celtics will be a game-time decision, Head Coach Byron Scott said Wednesday morning prior to shoot around. Center Tyson Chandler, on the other hand, will definitely be out for his 11th straight game since spraining his right ankle in a Martin Luther King Day game against Indiana. "I probably won't make a decision until I talk to him and tell him how I fee... ESPN has a list of trade rumblings and you need to go down on the page to #2 to find their pros and cons on talk that Tyson Chandler could be headed to Miami for Shawn Marion. The rationale is that the Hornets are trying to unload payroll and that Marion's contract expires at year end. The article also says that West and Paul are the Horne...
Yes, you read that headline correctly. And, it makes some sense, after all the non-stop runway to the Hornets' goal for layups can't all be credited to Paul's absence - can it? If it can, if Paul is normally the one who cuts off the drives and no one can do it with him gone, then he's even more valuable than we thought and should be a runaway MVP. ...Think Chris Paul loves basketball? He certainly does, but apparently his real love is bowling. ... |
