February 2009 ArchivesFINAL Chandler, whose trade was nixed by Oklahoma City a little more than a week ago, tipped in a David West miss with 3.3 seconds to play, giving the Hornets a 95-94 win over the visiting MIlwaukee Bucks. The 7-foot-1 center, quiet for much of the game, got just enough of a palm on West's miss to tip the ball o... ESPN's Bill Simmons - love him or loathe him - has an interesting (and long) column on the NBA's financial woes and he doesn't spare the Hornets' and their attempt to trade Tyson Chandler. If you are a pro basketball fan, I recommend reading this and judging future moves by all NBA teams accordingly. ...There's no question that Tyson Chandler was stung by the trade to Oklahoma City, but a report in Bleacher Report suggests it could spark a big second half. I almost have to agree. The attempted trade signaled to Chandler that the team wasn't satisfied with his level of play - at least at the cost they were paying - and if he l... From the Hornets Media Relations Staff: NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Hornets announced today that they will host their annual Top Hats and High Tops black tie gala on Friday, March 6 from 6 -10:30 p.m. at the Audubon Tea Room to benefit The George Shinn Foundation, Inc. This year's fund-raising gala will provide guests with live music by Jeremy Davenport, live and silent auctions with Hornets, sports and entertainment memorabi... FINAL David West grabbed a key rebound and hit two free throws with 6.7 seconds to play and the Hornets held on the defensive end to give New Orleans a 90-87 win Wednesday night at the New Orleans Arena.
New Orleans is stil... One thing that has been missing from the Hornets this year is a long winning streak. The longest they've had is four straight, which has happened only twice. Last year, they had four, five-game win streaks and a nine-game streak that took them from 23-12 to 32-12 and separated them into the upper echelon, where they stayed. This year, a nine-game streak would firmly entrench them in a playoff spot, but it seems anytime they get some momentum... In the NBA's Western Conference, the Hornets are tied for the final playoff spot if the season ended now and they are just a game and a half ahead of Phoenix. While they'd be shoo-ins in the East, this isn't the East and the Hornets haven't been hot. Of course, the Hornets are also only 3 games out of the third playoff spot, so this is shaping up like last year's race. ...Tyson Chandler keeps a blog. What, you didn't know? Well, in his latest blog, he discusses the trade, where he was when it happened and what his thoughts were when it was voided. As always, Chandler gets it. He understands the 21st century and the tools that he can use to get his voice and opinion out. ...Remember the last time Tyson Chandler played a basketball game? It was in January -- mid-January. In fact, it was MLK Day. Well, he's ba-ack! Chandler is expected to play today, his first game since sustaining an ankle injury on Jan. 19. The Hornets are 7-9, not including the game he was injured in, since Chandler left the lineup. ...ESPN's John Hollinger has a daily NBA rating matrix. I'm sure you've seen it before. I know you have - I've posted his ratings in prior blogs. Anyway, the Hornets, despite a two-game skid, are still at No. 12. Considering they're playing with Tyson Chandler and Morris Peterson as well as having Hilton Armstrong with a sore back, I'd say that's not a bad thing. I... On Chris Mannix's list of winners and losers after the NBA trade deadline he lists the Hornets as a winner for retaining Chandler and the Thunder as losers for nixing a deal that would have given them four, solid young players over an injury that has never concerned the Hornets. ...
Chris Broussard and Marc Stein of ESPN break down the Chandler no-deal and say that the big man is upset and doesn't understand why the deal didn't go through. He also has a telling quote about wanting to hurry up and play again for the Hornets, but after the trade, saying he would take his time to get back on the court. While he shouldn't play until he's healthy, the quot...
FINAL The Hornets All-Star point guard put his team on his back, scoring 36 points, dishing out 10 assists and grabbing six rebounds to pace New Orleans to a 117-85 win over Eastern Conference contender Orlando. New Orleans' 117 points was a season high, eclipsing the 116 it scored in a win ov... ESPN's John Hollinger doesn't think the trade of Tyson Chandler for Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith will hurt the team in the short run, but he said he figured the Hornets for a low playoff seed and first round exit anyway. He said when it will really hurt will be next year when Wilcox and Smith leave and the Hornets have little money to bol... Now, you might ask yourself what someone with the London Free Press is doing commenting on the Hornets trade of Tyson Chandler for two journeymen players. My guess is the guy is a stringer, but anyway, he says the Hornets have thrown in the towel with a purely economic move. What surprises me most is that no one is talking about how this sits with Chr...
OK, we've all seen Chris Paul and his magic. In Sunday's All-Star game, the Hornets guard was in full form, providing many highlight opportunities for himself and other players. And NBA.com apparently noticed that, too. In the site's Top 10 plays from the All-Star game, Paul is an integral part in half of them. Unfortunately, NBA.com doesn't allow you to embed the video, so >> Continue reading: CP3 on NBA's mind: Hornets guard in half of league's top 10 plays The other WWL - ESPN is the World Wide Leader in sports, or so it claims - believes the Hornets are shopping center Tyson Chandler as a way to fit back into its salary pants. The belt, apparently, is a little too tight. ESPN's Marc Stein reports that the Hornets and Oklahoma City could be in talks about some swaps. To find the ... At least according to John Hollinger's playoff odds. There are 9 teams vying for 8 playoff spots in the West, which is one fewer than last year. Hollinger projects the Hornets to finish with a 48-34 record and 7th in the West. My personal projection is 53-29, which would have them 4th in Hollinger's ratings. I think there's no question the Lakers are a lock for the top spot,... FINAL After going into the fourth quarter tied, Boston ripped off a 16-3 run to begin the final 12 minutes and cruised from there. And New Orleans couldn't do anything about it. The Hornets fell 89-77 Wednesday night at New Orleans Arena in front of 18,080 fans. ...Eyewitness News sports reporter Juan Kincaid says that Chris Paul is set to start versus the Boston Celtics for Wednesday's night game. Kincaid said that while he is going to be starting, he's probably not going to be playing his usual minutes. ...CBSSports.com columnist Ken Berger said that if he could choose any player to build a team around, he'd pick Chris Paul as his guy to "make the engine go." He cites the shifting nature of the game and the increasing importance of perimeter players as his reasons for choosing Paul; but simply put, he thinks he's the best point guard in the game. Mike Freeman, on the other... Whether All-Star point guard Chris Paul plays tonight against the Boston Celtics will be a game-time decision, Head Coach Byron Scott said Wednesday morning prior to shoot around. Center Tyson Chandler, on the other hand, will definitely be out for his 11th straight game since spraining his right ankle in a Martin Luther King Day game against Indiana. "I probably won't make a decision until I talk to him and tell him how I fee... A few sites have put out their power ratings already and the loss of Chris Paul, along with a four-game skid that recently ended, shows that the Hornets are, at best, a little better than average right now. Athlon Sports has New Orleans coming in at No. 10. ESPN's 'Hollinger Ratings'<... FINAL Only this time, the Hornets picked up the win without the 3-pointers. New Orleans took an early lead, lost it for much of the game and then took it towards the end before holding on for a 101-97 win over Minnesota. Friday night against Toronto, New Orleans tied a franchise record with 15 3-pointers. O... Kobe/LeBron at the Garden
Final Luckily for New Orleans, the 3-point shot is legal. And it took full advantage of that fact, nailing 15 3-pointers to help the Hornets overcome a 8-point deficit with 6:54 to play in the game. First Rasual Butler hit a trey. Then James Posey. Then Butler... Ryan Bowen will start for the Hornets tonight against the Raptors, Head Coach Byron Scott said Friday morning before the team's shoot around. Bowen hasn't started yet this season and has played in only six games. But his minutes have been creeping up the past few weeks. The reason? Scott said he likes Bowen's energy and hustle. "The thing we know about RB is he's going to play hard," Scott said. "Even when he's bent ove... ESPN has a list of trade rumblings and you need to go down on the page to #2 to find their pros and cons on talk that Tyson Chandler could be headed to Miami for Shawn Marion. The rationale is that the Hornets are trying to unload payroll and that Marion's contract expires at year end. The article also says that West and Paul are the Horne...
Yes, you read that headline correctly. And, it makes some sense, after all the non-stop runway to the Hornets' goal for layups can't all be credited to Paul's absence - can it? If it can, if Paul is normally the one who cuts off the drives and no one can do it with him gone, then he's even more valuable than we thought and should be a runaway MVP. ...Final They're not the ones he was looking for, however. New Orleans played little defense and the offense was out of sync without Chris Paul and the Hornets fell 107-93 to the Chicago Bulls. The Hornets shot 36.2 percent while allowing Chicago to make 56.2 percent of its shots. Every Bulls starter scored in double figures, led by Derrick Rose's 21 points. Da... Think Chris Paul loves basketball? He certainly does, but apparently his real love is bowling. ... |
