In Lafourche Parish, president Charlotte Randolph issued a mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Ike in all areas south of the Leon Theriot floodgates in Golden Meadow, as well as the Pointe-Aux-Chenes community. There, a state of emergency has been called. Also, in Jefferson Parish, a mandatory evacuation has been set up for Grand Isle. There is a voluntary evacuation that begins noon Thursday for Jean Lafitte, Crown Point, Barataria and areas outside of the levee protection system. A bus will be available at Jean Lafitte Town Hall, 2654 Jean Lafitte Boulevard, at noon Thursday for those who need help evacuating. At 5185 Eighty Arpent Road in Marrero and the Larose Civic Center in Lafourche Parish, shelters will be set up noon Thursday. Also, yesterday in St. Bernard Parish, president Craig Taffaro set a voluntary evacuation for residents southeast of Verrett - which includes the communities of Shell Beach, Alluvial City, Delacroix Island, Reggio, Florissant and Hopedale. Plaquemines Parish also set a voluntary evacuation, effective 4 p.m. Thursday. Public INformation Officer Karen Boudrie said that it is for any residents who don't feel safe in their homes and they strongly urge those in FEMA trailers to evacuate.
