Fielkow, Head: N.O. Residents should be allowed back sooner

STATEMENT FROM N.O. COUNCIL MEMBERS ARNIE FIELKOW AND STACY HEAD

Fielkow and Head have worked for 24 hours to encourage the administration to allow access to the city earlier.

At a minimum, Orleans should have followed all the other parishes and allowed re-entry as of 6 am Wednesday.

While conditions in New Orleans are not good, electricity is not widely available, and health services are seriously depleted, Cms Head and Fielkow believe that people who need to return, particularly small business owners, should be allowed to make decisions for themselves.

Sure, let 'em all back in all at the same time and clog up the highways for miles and miles in every direction with people running out of gas, breakdowns, etc. ad nauseum. Re-entry should be tiered in the order of services restored parish by parish. Orleans and Jefferson are too close together with residents all using the same entry points. My power has been back since Monday evening but I am more than willing to wait for services to be restored as well, ie., gas, food, health services, etc. All I can say is GOOD LUCK to those waiting in the traffic.

Most of the time I agree with Council people Fielkow and Head. That being said, I think that they have not thought this one through.

It is not a good idea to ahve thousands of people driving around the city without traffic lights. It is not a good idea to have thousands of people in the city without being able to use their sanitary facilities. It is not a good idea to have thousands of people in the city without adequate medical services and facilities. It is not a good idea to have thousands of people in the city without power, and without grocery stores or restaurants or gas stations.

In this instance, I believe that Fielkow and Head are pandering. It is easy for the normally thoughtful Fielkow and Head to say that everyone should come back immediately because they have no responsibility for the decision. If the Mayor listens to them and lets everyone back in immediately and it turns into a nightmare, no one will blame Fielkow and Head, they will only blame the Mayor.

I never agree with the Mayor! In fact, if I had my way, he would have resigned long ago. However in this case, I think the Mayor made a tough, but correct decision.

I was very glad to pull back into my Orleans neighborhood today even though it still lacks electricity. I evacuated to Baton Rouge because I couldn't afford the fuel to travel much futher than that and was provided free room and board. No electricity, no ice, no gas and grid locked roads. It was very similar to days following Katrina.Couldn't watch the news on TV or laptop...no electricity to recharge batteries. I JUST WANTED OUT! Upon my arrival home, I washed my car, emptied my fridge, took a bath and enjoyed my back porch. My dog is glad to be home too since he has been locked in a kennel due to lack of fencing in Baton Rouge. The travel in was very steady, but fuel was definitely an issue. Thanks Mr Felkow and Mrs Head...you were right on..."rather be hot and happy in NOLA home than hot and miserable in Baton Rouge"
